Mangaluru, Oct 1: A student of St Aloysius PU College was found hanging in the college hostel on Thursday October 1. Following the incident, students led by ABVP gathered at the college premises the same afternoon and protested demanding investigation into the case and arrest of the assistant director.
Noel Mendonca, son of Wally and Irene Mendonca, allegedly committed suicide by hanging in his room late night on Wednesday September 30. His roommate was on leave and Noel was alone in the room before he took the extreme step, it is learnt.
The incident came to light on Thursday when other hostel inmates knocked on his door and got no response. They informed the warden, who then looked in through the ventilator window and saw Noel hanging.
The reason behind the suicide is not yet known, but the protestors alleged that harasmment by hostel's assistant director drove Noel to suicide. They demanded the arrest of the assistant director and thorough investigation into the case.
Sources said that about three days ago, he had shown a death note to his friends.
The protestors also claimed that the assistant director of the hostel had demanded Rs 15,000 from Noel, but they could not say why. The ABVP activists said that they tried calling the assistant director but his phone was switched off.
"When we approached the management asking the reason behind Noel's suicide, we were told that the hostel management was different, but there is no one in the hostel we can speak to. The warden also was not there," the ABVP activists said.
The management has reportedly said that a personal issue may have been behind Noel's suicide.
Sources in the college said that Noel had been caught stealing a mobile phone about six months back. He was basically from Mumbai, and his parents are on their way to Mangaluru.
The Bunder police arrived at the spot and dispersed the protestors.
