Chinese boy killed in escalator accident


Beijing, Oct 9 (IANS): A four-year-old boy in the Chinese city of Chongqing was killed after being trapped under an escalator handrail at a subway station, the media reported on Friday.

The incident took place on Thursday in Hongqiaohegou subway station, the People's Daily reported.

The boy, who was left unattended while his mother went to a nearby restroom, played at the escalator before falling over and got trapped. His chest was wedged between the bottom of the handrail and the ground.

Subway station staff shut off the escalator after 20 seconds. He succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

In July, a woman was killed after she fell through loose metal plates at an escalator landing in Jingzhou in Hubei province.
