Tiruvallur, Jul 21: In a shocking incident that has raised serious concerns over child safety in Tamil Nadu, a 10-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly sexually assaulted in Tiruvallur district. Nearly a week after the crime, the police have released CCTV images of the unidentified accused and sought public assistance in identifying him.
The disturbing visuals captured in CCTV footage show the man stalking the minor girl and later forcibly lifting her, according to police sources. The child was reportedly attacked in a public space, triggering outrage across the region.

A case has been registered under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Multiple special teams have been deployed to trace the suspect, who remains at large.
“We have formed special teams and expect a breakthrough soon,” a senior police officer told NDTV. The Tiruvallur Police also released the suspect's images on their official social media handles and urged the public to provide any information that could lead to his arrest.
Child rights activists expressed alarm over the incident, stating that it highlights the urgent need for better safety measures for children. “Every time a child is harmed, it's not just a law and order issue — it’s a systemic failure to protect the most vulnerable,” said a Chennai-based activist.
The incident has drawn sharp political reactions as well. The AIADMK accused the ruling DMK of failing to ensure women's and children's safety. Former state BJP chief K Annamalai demanded immediate action and said the accused continuing to roam free is a threat to society.
The state has witnessed a worrying rise in crimes against women and children in recent times. However, the government has pointed to its efforts in delivering swift justice in some cases, citing recent examples like the life sentence in the Anna University sexual assault case and another involving the attack on a pregnant woman aboard a moving train.
While the manhunt continues, activists are calling for not just punishment, but also long-term preventive measures, improved surveillance, and stronger community involvement to ensure the safety of children.
