New Delhi, Aug 8: Muttiah Muralitharan's herculean feat of scalping more than 1100 wickets in international cricket has failed to impress Bishen Singh Bedi, as after calling him a 'javelin thrower', the former India skipper now attributes the champion Sri Lanka spinner 'a shot putter' tag.

Bedi, a strong opinion maker on modern day cricket, in particular, is a vehement critic of Muralitharan's bowling action, which he bluntly refers to as cheating.

''Our kanhaiya (Murali), who I called the best shot putter, will go on to become the highest wicket taker of all time, that for me is not right,'' he said.

However, the 68-year-old former spinner, has expressed his dissatisfaction over the excessive use of technology in the game, and instead asked the on-field umpires to the final call on matters of chucking.

''We have taken technology too far. It is the on-field umpires who should take the call, if the umpires in the middle feels that a bowler's action is good enough than so be it,'' Bedi said on the sidelines of a book release function here on Monday.

Castigating the 35-year-old off-spinner, Bedi said, ''If your are a blind person, will you be given a chance to fly a plane. He (Murali) uses it to his advantage.

''You have to bowl with the shoulder, but Murali don't use it, he use his arm. You have to use ur naked eyes to decide this.'' ''For a bowler a five wicket haul means 150-runs from a batsman.

Sachin Tendulkar has got 37 centuries, Don Bradman has got 29, how many five-wickets haul he (Murali) has got under his kitty, 65, this is ludicrous,'' the frank-speaking sikh added.

" Forget about modern technology and all other crap"? Well where do you want to draw the line on that one? Modern technology is used everywhere in cricket to improve the grounds, equipment, live broadcasts etc.

Why should it not be used to judge the validity of a bowling action? I'm all for letting umpires have the final say in matters that they could definitely get right. Even if they get the occational LBW etc. wrong they have all the information to make the correct decision.

Bowling actions are a different matter altogether. They simply are not in a position to see whether a bowler bends his elbow or not (and also monitor feet related no-balls). That has nothing to do with modern technology and can be understood by anyone with a basic understanding of physics. Just because the umpires were asked to do a job they could not do properly for 150 years that doesn't mean that we should continue that farce.

Bishen Singh Bedi was one of the famous bowlers of the India's spin quartet, the others being E.A.S. Prasanna, B.S. Chandrasekhar and S. Venkataraghavan. In an over, he could bowl six different bowlers and he was a poetry in motion. In fact, none of the India's famed quartet could be accused of chucking.

They had very clean and neat bowling action, much above reproach. After retirement I like him for his frank and fearless comments. He is neither a flunkey or a sycophant. Otherwise, a cricketer of his mettle would have been holding a position in BCCI. For me, Muralitharan is not a bowler, but a chucker.

So whatever records he has created and meangingless. I would anyday consider Shane Warne as a bowler, but Muralitharan as a ace chucker. If any bowlers' action is suspect to the naked eye, then he is a chucker and he should not be allowed to bowl. Forget about modern technology and all other crap like one can bend one's arm to so and so degree. This is just a farce.

Due to chuckers being allowed to bowl, cricket has become another World Freestyle Wrestling. Apart from Muralitharan, there are other bowlers who are chuckers too. However, today cricket is a money spinning and churning game. Therefore, cricketers, administrators, coaches, managers, umpires and others earn mind-boggling amount and they would neither like to bell the cat or blow the whistle. That would be like shooting one's foot.
