President Pranab Mukherjee again calls for preserving plural character of India

New Delhi, Oct 31, 2015 (PTI) : President Pranab Mukherjee today once again called for preserving the multiplicity and pluralistic character of the country and said India has thrived due to its power of assimilation and tolerance.

The President, who had on a number of occasions spoken against growing intolerance in the last three weeks, was speaking at the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Delhi High Court here.

"Our country has thrived due to its power of assimilation and tolerance. Our pluralistic character has stood the test of time. Our ancient civilisation has over the centuries accommodated our diversities.

"Multiplicity is our collective strength which must be preserved at all costs. It finds reflection in the various provisions of our Constitution," Mukherjee said at the function which was attended by Chief Justice of India H L Dattu, Chief Justice of Delhi High Court G Rohini, Lt Governor of Delhi Najeeb Jung and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

In the wake of the Dadri lynching and subsequent incidents, the President had asked a question whether tolerance and acceptance of dissent are on the wane in the country during a function at his home town at Suri in West Bengal on October 19.

This was followed by an appeal to people for practising tolerance and to accept differences while respecting dissent.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also endorsed the President's remarks and asked people to ignore rabble rousing by leaders and fringe elements.

The President's appeals came against the backdrop of lynching incident in Dadri in which a Muslim was killed on suspicion of eating beef, and a string of incidents like the one in Mumbai where BJP ally Shiv Sena forced cancellation of a music concert by Pakistani legend Ghulam Ali and talks between Indian and Pakistani cricket board Chiefs and blackened the face of Sudheendra Kulkarni.

The killing of a truck conductor in Udhampur and a man in Himachal Pradesh on suspicion of cow smuggling for slaughter have also raised political temperature in the country that had triggered controversial statements by some BJP leaders.

Since Modi has become PM situation has gone bad to worse . He is only in PM for names sake while RSS and extreme elements in BJP run the country. When situation gets intolerable, he goes on foreign tours. If this is continued all businesses will shy away from coming to India and so will foreign investments.

Will foreign business shy away from coming to Karnataka after Prashant's murder? Did they shy away from coming to Bombay after 26/11? Did they shy away from coming to Delhi after a church was desecrated by Haider Ali? If they didn't then why the noise now?

Mr. President, you are trying double hard being the President of India delivering the pluralism sermon.

How pluralism can be survived peacefully while the ruling party has already sown the seeds of friction, thus the street goons taking advantage of the situation.
The Prime Minister of India so far had been totally delinquent in addressing the issues facing the solidarity and security of the minorities. As long as Mr. Modi is playing the cat and mouse game plan, the sermons of plurality will be far less valid and effective.

    Dear readers,

This is the very message has emboldened the Saffron fanatics of the ruling clowns which shame the India in Dadri.

It is believed that late PM Narasimha Rao is the first PM of BJP not Vajpayee. Now we may think it is not Kalam but Mr.Mukerji as the same context.

Dear Rosario, please understand this. This is what I believe to be true. Modi is not a victim of the Sangh parivar but Modi is a part of the Sangh parivar thinking because the way in which your comments are written it makes it look like Modi is the nice guy and a good PM but the RSS are spoiling his image. In my opinion and I know in a lot of other people's opinions too Modi's agenda, BJP's agenda and the RSS's agenda are one and the same. That is why apart from tokenism he is not making any serious effort to stop or criticize what has been happening recently with Dalits, beef etc.
Therefore, I wish people stop making excuses for Modi's non-performance in these matters. What is he PM for with such a huge mandate ? Is it just to tour overseas on tax payers money ?

This is happening for the first time in the history of India's 68 years rule.President's frequent request proves the failure of the present Govt to preserve multiplicity and pluralistic character maintained since ancient civilisation. Amit Shah's election speech at Bihar regarding bursting crackers in PAK is a an example, which to be condemned.

Mr. President what is the use of giving such call for the Third time within just one month ?
Wherever you go on official visit within India, you make it a point to visit the famous Hindu temple nearby and perform all types of special poojas openly exhibiting all your caste marks. So, Sangh Parivar people have started thinking that "you are one of them" even though you have congress background. That is why your call to preserve plural character of society is in vein.

Yes, Ravikiran Rai Kotekar, what you have said about our Honorable President Pranab Mukherji's temple visits is true. He is caste conscious and behaves more like Vaidik Priests.
