Women should take lead in farming: Himachal governor

Palampur, Nov 1 (IANS): Himachal Pradesh Governor Acharya Devvrat on Sunday advocated that women, who are excelling in every field, should take lead to strengthen the agriculture.

Speaking at the CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University convocation here, he said agriculture could witness a revolution if women participated in farming.

"They are not only hard working but also proving their worth in every field," he said.

Devvrat also asked the womenfolk to take up studies related to agriculture and equip themselves with knowledge regarding farming activities and specialised techniques for effectively contributing towards the agriculture sector.

The governor urged the farmers to adopt traditional and organic farming to enhance the quality of their produce and to get better prices in the market.

Expressing concern over the use of pesticides and fertilisers, he said that organic food leads not only to healthy living but its farming is environment friendly too.

Devvrat called upon the scientists of the university to hold camps across the state to educate the farming community about organic and traditional farming.

"Special awareness should be generated for adopting zero-budgeting for improving the existing agriculture practices."

He also asked the scientists to conduct intensive research and develop new techniques besides improving the existing ones especially in organic farming.

Himachal Pradesh's agriculture and horticulture economy is highly dependent upon rain as more than 80 percent of the area is rain fed.
