BSF, Pakistan Rangers meet to maintain peace


Jammu, Nov 4 (IANS): Border Security Force (BSF) and Pakistan Rangers officers have met in Jammu region in a bid to maintain peace on the international border, officials said on Wednesday.

A flag meeting was held in Samba sector on Tuesday evening between the commanders of the BSF's 9th Battalion and the Rangers' 24th Battalion at a border outpost called Mangu Chack, BSF sources told IANS.

"This meeting was called by the Pakistani Rangers," a source said.

Among those who took part in the meeting were V.B. Yadav, deputy commandant of the BSF, and Asim Bhatti, wing commander of the Rangers.

The main objective of the meeting was to maintain a peaceful atmosphere along the international border and ensure that no one violates the 2003 ceasefire.

Farmers in both countries are busy harvesting the paddy crop while the cultivation of wheat would begin shortly.

"Officers of both sides stressed that the farmers have suffered because of cross-border shelling and every effort now needs to be made to help them by maintaining peace on the international border," the source said.

On Monday, two Indian soldiers were killed by the Pakistan Army on the Line of Control (LoC) in Gurez sector of Bandipora district in the Kashmir Valley.
