One killed as elephants overrun Bengal village

Kolkata, Nov 6 (IANS): A herd of wild elephants overran a village in West Bengal's Burdwan district, killing one man and injuring two others including his wife, villagers said on Friday.

"The elephants entered Galsi and started foraging for food. In the process, one of the jumbos ended up killing one man who was sleeping in the compound outside his house. Two others, including the man's wife, were injured in the rampage," a villager told a local television channel.

A 'hoola party' or mobile elephant squad of domesticated elephants was pressed into service by local forest officials to drive the wild herd out of the village.
