Mangaluru, Nov 16: The murders of Madoor Isubu and Ganesh Shetty in the jail premises on November 2 were committed by different gangs, and they have registered as separate cases, said police commissioner S Murugan.
Addressing a press meet at his office here on Monday November 16, Murugan said that Isubu was murdered by a gang, after which Ganesh was killed by a mob. However, he did not name the gang.
Also, he said that four persons have been arrested in the case for supplying the weapons. They are Mahesh Kavoor (35), Latish Akash Bhavan (23), Satish Acharya Benjanapadavu (40), and Kamalaksha Poojary Tenkabellur (37). Among them, Satish manufactured the weapons and handed them over to Kamalaksha, who then passed it on to Mahesh. On October 31, Latish rode the bike while Mahesh, who was sitting pillion, tossed the weapons over the jail wall from the direction of the District Institute of Education and Training located by the side of the prison. The police have confiscated a dagger and five knives, the police commissioner said.
"Further investigations are on. We are studying the role of each person in the case," he added.
Referring to another case reported earlier in the day, Murugan said that the police have arrested three persons - Bhanwarlal (31), Kishore Kumar and Saganlal Rawat - for robbing Rs 1,30,000 in cash and gold and other valuables worth Rs 1,44,000 from textile merchants on Sunday November 15.
The police also seized one pistol, two knives, 8 mobile phones, 10 grams of gold, Rs 95,000 in cash, a Scorpio, and an Indica car from the accused. The operation was led under the guidance of DCP (crime) Dr Sanjeeva Patil.
Also, in another case, the Mangaluru north police arrested two persons for attacking cops on Saturay November 14, when Section-144 was in place. Murugan explained that on November 14 night, the police had seen a group of seven moving about suspiciously at JM Road, and when questioned, the group attacked them with a rod, injuring one of the cops. While two of them, identified as M Arif (29), a resident of Bunder, and Ahmed Sharwan (23) of Jeppu have been arrested, the other five are absconding, the police commissioner said.
Section 144 to continue in Ullal and Suratkal
The police commissioner also said that though Section 144 has been lifted in Dakshina Kannada at large, it will continue in Ullal and Suratkal for three more days from 6 am to 6 pm. KSRP and RAF squads have been deployed in sensitive areas and the police are monitoring sensitive areas in the city, he added.
He urged people to cooperate with the police especially during communal tension.
