Udupi, Aug 14: The locals and Padubidri police saved a cow which had fallen into a deep pit on Sunday Aug 12.

A pedestrian, who spotted the cow in the pit, informed the police and the locals. Padubidri SI Navinchandra Jogi and subordinates rushed to rescue the cow.  A bulldozer which was requisitioned to the apot did not serve the purpose.

Finally the cow was retrieved and pulled out to safety by fastening a rope around it. The operation has lasted 2 hours. The locals have expressed their anguish over these pits which are being dug by a private power compan.

When, these days, there is more of superficial concern for the cattle and lip sympathy to cow protection on personal agendas and no genuine acts of kindness are shown, such commendable effort should be recognized and rewarded in public, said a local community leader Raghavendra to our correspondent.

Another concerned citizen, Vadiraj,  said that while so much fuss was being made about the welfare of the livestock, not much attention is being paid to the cattle being allowed to stray on the roads, thus exposing them to traffic hazards and causing accidents.
