With Free Electric bicycle, billionaire wants to fix India’s power problem

New Delhi, Nov 29 (The Indian Express): A bicycle that produces electricity when pedalled might sound like an idea straight out of science fiction, but billionaire philanthropist Manoj Bhargava would disagree. Bhargava who showed off a prototype of his ‘electricity-creating cycle,’ plans to launch the same in India by March 2016.

Named Free Electric, since creating electricity via this stationary bicycle would be technically free, the product will be priced in the Rs 12,000 – 15,000 segment at launch.

‘Free Electric’ works by converting kinetic energy into electric energy. As the user pedals the flywheel, it spins a generator, which in turns charges the attached battery. The bicycle can be pedalled to directly light up other electric-powered components too.

“There are approximately 1.3 billion people around the world who are deprived of electricity and the free electric bicycle was conceived to provide electricity to this population,” said Manoj Bhargava, who was born in India but moved to the US during his teens.

The US-based billionaire is confident that an hour’s worth of ‘cycling’ will be enough to address the electricity needs of a rural home. But don’t expect the free electricity cycle to start running your AC just yet. At max, the bike can light up 24 bulbs, power an electric fan and charge a mobile device simultaneously. The bicycle also comes bundled with a charging dock with three USB ports.

Currently the patent for the technology behind Free Electric is held by Bhargava, who plans to license it to few companies in order to expand the reach of his product.

At the launch event, Bhargava said the design and manufacturing would take place in US, but added he will manufacture the bike in India as well, to reduce final price. After India, he plans to take the project to 50 other countries in the African continent and in the Middle-East region.

The billionaire has already pledged 99 percent of his net worth of $4 billion to developing sustainable solutions.

In India, where the so called needy people live in one room\kitchen\lav, wonder where they can accommodate this E\Bicycle is the question.
They and other less fortunate will not be able to use it to light their houses or use the power for other gadgets.
Good gadget for those who have space to accommodate it for exercising and also fixing their power shortage with less expense.

There are many Indians who pledge big for charity. This gentleman has pledged just 99% of his net worth.

The pledge adds weight to press releases.

It impresses people that earn very little, and have no spare money for any charity.

One of those who pledges huge amounts to charity is a software services king in India.

But the question is, why don't we hear the actual numbers that have been donated? Or, is the pledge going to materialise after another 100 years?

After pledging 99% of his net worth, he still wants to sell the cycle for Rs 12,000 – 15,000.

It is a great idea from a billionaire philanthropist. Let us encourage it as opposed to the ideas of our billionaire Mallya. Yes, Farady might have invented it long ago but why any one did not think of it for using for the benefit of the public use by common people?

Being the Dynamo Cycle was invented in 1931, it is an encouragement for us (after a couple of centuries) to generate massive energy by using the millions of tons of weight on wheels which carried and moved every day, from standstill positions till destinations.
Let's be creative and productive, to generate free and clean energy.

Congrats to Mr.Manoj Bhargava. The idea can be extended to do exercise at home to maintain good health by all not necessarily the poor. Electicity generated this way and stored in batteries can be used through inverter in every household thereby reducing consumption from the grid, leading to less burning of coal and pollution.Wow!

Wonderful idea but it will occupy additional space
As we already have numerous vehicles on roads and in parks,
if we use these running wheels as power generators, the opportunity is to eliminate health hazardous air pollution, peace disturbing sound pollution, stop consumption of economy burning expensive fuel and utilize the huge savings on development and growth.
Instead of waiting for the billionaires to take the initiative, the billion people can play a wonderful role and achieve it.

    Congratulations
    Excellent idea with generous thought
In fact, the entire weight of commuters and goods on wheels can be used as a powerful pushing force which can eliminate the fuel consumption and in the meantime, the opportunity is to generate a considerable volume of free and clean energy.
The need is to think different and implement change.
We can Make in India and Implement Worldwide

Great Stuff !! This will not only eradicate power issues in rural areas but will also be good exercise for older people who have zero physical activities. Lesson to learn for our local billionaires like Ambanis/Adanis/Birla's etc. and realize its time for them to give something back to the society which has given them so much.

May god bless Mr. Bhargava with good health so he could continue with this noble cause.

Amabni, Adani, Tata, Wipro, Essar, and other big business house also think about it and support India to become self reliance on energy.
