Mangaluru, Dec 1: Deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, A B Ibrahim, has announced that public, religious, or political public meetings, processions, protests, jatha, dharna, strikes, Rasta Roko, pasting of wall posters, mobbing, laying siege etc have been banned in the entire district from 12 midnight on December 5 to 12 midnight on December 6. This ban has been imposed in exercise of powers conferred under section 35 of Karnataka Police Act 1963, he stated.
December 6 is the anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition.
The DC explained that a decision to ban the above activities was taken in view of some unwarranted incidents which occurred in the district in the recent past. "At present there is peace in the district and law and order prevails. But, if meetings, functions, processions, and protests are allowed, some elements may use such opportunities as a forum to create unnecessary confusions by issuing provocative statements, which may give rise to incidents disturbing peace and tranquility in the district." he added.
"We often observe that unpleasant incidents occur during processions, which give rise to public inconvenience. In this context, a meeting will be held on December 5 for receiving suggestions on ways and means to ensure that the organizers of such processions hold processions in a disciplined manner without creating problems for the people," he said at a press conference held here on Monday, November 30.
He also revealed that legal experts and high level officials are being consulted on the practicability of taking action against people who give call for bandh.
