Udupi: Orphan girl tortured for years by aunt rescued, rehabilitated

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, Dec 9: A girl who lost her parents at a young age and who was being constantly tortured from the past several years by her aunt was rescued at Salikeri, Brahmavar here on Tuesday December 8.

The girl Nitya (name changed) lost her parents when she was just 7 years old, and since then was living with her aunt Girija. It is alleged that ever since the girl came to live with her, Girija constantly harassed and tortured her physically.

It is also alleged that recently, Girija sprayed chilli powder into Nitya's eyes just because she went to her friend's house.

Nitya is now 17, but already her aunt has decided to marry her off, sources said. Worried over this, the girl took the help of her neighbours and contacted Srishtidhama and human rights activists.

When the officials, locals and rescue volunteers came to Girija's house and questioned her about the allegations of torture, the youths in her house reportedly abused them and even came forward to assault them.

The girl was eventually rescued with the help of the police. She was taken to Srishtidhama for rehabilitation, and it is learnt that Srishtidhama has assured the police of taking full responsibility of the girl.

However, as no one came forward to file a complaint, the police said that they have not registered any case.

May be the aunt was trying to be strict with her. Actual case needs to be verified. sometime elders give harsh punishment for our own good.

My mother has punished me with rubbing chilly paste ( arepu) when I stealed money from my aunty's home . This doesn't mean my mom was torturing me or hated me. Her punishment at the right time have made me what I am today ? So all punishments from elders are not wrong ? This girl was taken care of by this family from her age 7 and they were looking at getting married also and not keep her at home. Why not think this girl was going to a wrong neighbour's house and the aunty was trying to correct the girl. Finally it should not look like people who have helped the girl are punished finally .

40 years ago my both parents were working in Bombay and we the siblings were under the care of our maternal relatives. We were tortured, molested, mistreated & abused by our Aunt & her family. we were saved by the neighbors & sent to Catholic orphanage run by the Bethany sisters in Kulshekar. Organized orphanages is a better home for orphans & poor then the relatives. Today we all are Blessed due to the care and education from the nuns.

These acts of cruelty should never go unnoticed and un-punished. It is very good to see that the young girl has now been rescued and rehabilitated.

It is my hope that police will go to the bottom of this crime and book the guilty.

Beautiful rose bud fierced by thorn
Suffering only was in her portion
    A victim of circumstances
Helpless in the face of destiny
Now it is picked by those who care
Allowing it to bloom, to spread perfume.

If she was happy why would she take help Mr. Charles. Just analyse and read the article again before commenting. Her aunt and family should be punished for this. Thank God this child had the guts and sensed she should take help. Wonder how many kids are tortured in the same way. Glad she is out of hell.
