New Delhi, Aug 25: Newly merged national carrier Air India is in advanced talks to formally join global airline grouping Star Alliance - a move which would immensely benefit its customers, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said tonight.
"They (Air India) are keen that they join a major alliance and are in advanced talks with Star Alliance. Joining such an alliance will enhance its reputation which would provide immense benefits to the passengers," he said.
The new entity, which completed all legal processes of the merger on Friday, would have to work hard not only to become the best in Asia, but the best in the world, Patel said.
As most of the capacity which is being inducted will be replacing the ageing fleet, Air India will have to add more capacity for expansion and will get all support from the government for the same, the minister said.
The Star Alliance comprises Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand, Lufthansa, United Airlines, Thai, US Airways, South African Airways, Swissair, Austrian, Span Air, Asiana Airlines and Polish Airlines.
