Mangaluru, Dec 27: Amidst protests from various groups, the police department has banned the entry of Islamic scholar Dr Zakir Naik into Mangaluru city for a period of one week.
Dr Zakir Naik was scheduled to address a programme on January 3, 2016, organized by South Kanara Salafi Movement (SKSM).
In view of security concerns, police commissioner S Murugan has issued prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC banning Dr Zakir Naik from entering the limits of Mangaluru city and participating in any public meeting/function for a period of 7 days from December 31 to January 6.
Various groups like Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, Bajrang Dal, VHP and Hindu Mahasabha had demanded a ban on the entry of Dr Zakir Naik into Mangaluru, alleging that he would deliver a provocative speech, and had warned that the government would be held responsible if peace was disrupted during Dr Naik's visit.
