Hassan: Hungry Student Begs for Rice – Teacher Flogs her Face

Nina Rai - Daijiworld Media Network Mangalore

Hassan, Aug 30: It is indeed an inhuman act by a teacher, whose duty it is to guide   young students and teach them about morality and humanity along with enhancing their knowledge.

A teacher of the government primary school in Kodaramanahalli village of Kattaya Hobli near Hassan, ruthlessly beat up Tulasi, a fourth standard student for asking an extra bowl of rice when food was being served under the “bisi oota” mid-day lunch scheme which is provided by many schools in the interiors of Karnataka, wherein students are provided free lunch by the government.

10 year old Tulsi, a poor student from same village did not have breakfast that morning because her grand mother was not well. By lunch break the poor child was so hungry that she gobbled her food fast, but was still un-satiated as hunger pangs were gnawing within her and so the child requested for some more rice. She made the request to her teacher Shivanna who is in-charge of the mid-day lunch in the school. But Shivanna without showing any remorse for human plight reacted by inhumanly thrashing the hungry child left, right and centre, allegedly for half an hour.

The injured Tulsi did not reveal this incident to her grandmother at home immediately. However, next morning when she was refusing to go to school in pain, her grandma came to know that the teacher had beaten her so badly, that she had bruises all over her body and a cut injury on one of her cheeks. She was then immediately taken to the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences where she was provided treatment.

Parents have protested the said matter to the deputy director for public instruction (DDPI) Padmamma and informed the journalists about the facts of the case.

After studying the case, the DPI initiated action by suspending the teacher Shivanna.  Speaking to the media later, the DDPI Padmamma informed that she had suspended the accused teacher based on the report submitted by the block education officer (BEO) Pushpalata, who personally visited the school, along with the doctor to conduct an inquiry.

The DDPI also said that the departmental inquiry has been ordered into the incident to submit a detail report to the government in this connection. Kindly note this is not the first instance of corporal punishment in school where young children are beaten by teachers in the name of discipline. Recently in Madya Pradesh too a young 12 year old student was so mercilessly beaten by a female teacher that he later died at the hospital due to head injuries. His only crime was that being a tall child he had spread out his leg outside the table during the exams.

In the above matter, F R Jamaadar, Zilla Panchayat chief executive officer on Wednesday 29 August 2007 stated that he had sent circular to all schools in the district directing teachers not to carry canes/sticks with them. Hence if they are found beating students, they would be suspended and criminal cases would be filed against them. Hope this does put an end to barbaric corporal punishments in schools or will it?

I do not condone the behaviour of the teacher. But I wonder whether the incident is reported in its totality. I cannot believe that a teacher could beat a child for half an hour just because the child asked for more rice. By and large the teachers are kind hearted people. They might get angry and irritated with the naughty children in the classroom. But like parents they forget everything the moment they leave their class. Of course there are exeptions to this.

We all feel very much for the little one who is bruised and hurt. But I like to make a point here. These days it is very difficult to be teacher. Today a teacher''s role is confined to her class room and to lecturing or teaching the subject given to her. That''s all and not more than that. Today''s children (most of them) are spoilt brat. The parents have one or two children and they adore them litterally. The children expect the same adoration from the teachers and school authorities. No disciplinary action can be taken on them.

Of course corporal punishment is wrong and forbidden. Can they be shouted at? No. It goes gainst the child''s right. It will be termed as abuse, mental torture. ask the child stand outside the class, it''s wrong because the child will miss the class and the parents are paying the fees. Call the parents? Invariably the adoring parents do not see anything wrong in child''s behaviour.

They even argue and raise their voice and speak to the Principal or the teachers concerned. Recently a parent went to hit a teacher in front of his child! Report to the Principal? The principal wants peace at any cost. Give imposition? The child comes next day without doing that because the child had to go for tuition. As a result today many of the teachers just ignore the bad behaviour of the children. " I have come here to work.

The good behaviour or the bad behaviour - it''s none of my business..." many teacher have come to hold this attitude. No one understands the theacher ia a human being, with his /her own hang ups, problems and tensions. No body makes much of the bad behaviour of the students. No body thinks of even the rowdy behaviour of students in the class room. The teachers has to put up with it throught out her/his life.

But the moment a small mistake a teacher commits, the whole world speaks about it. Just read some of the comments on this peice of news item. " hang him... jail him... shut him in a dark room... Ultimately it is the parents and the students who are going to lose in the long run, if the teachers confine their role just to teaching their respective subjects, if they are not supported and empowered... of course not for wrong reasons.

Above incident tells us that many teachers have forgotten their profession, one of the most important one, where they have to share the knowledge of intellegence with their students and at the same time mould the child in such a way the child will face the world for the betterment of he/she and the dependants in the future.

The teachers should know After the parents they are the best pal of a child. Most of the time a child listen to a teacher more than her/his parents if given a little love and compassion, with that child can be a successful later. Instead, some teachers think they are doing a big favour by teaching and therefore they can do anything to that child.

Perhaps some teachers do not know what is hunger. The teachers should remember that they taught child becomes a celebrity and an example to others one day then they are also part of it. Therefore, whatever a child becomes one day, good or bad, the teachers also responsible for it some way or the other.

If all the teachers remember this, then the society will turn out to be a peaceful, interlligent and loving one. My request to all the teachers is let your intellegence flow in the minds of children together with love and affection and make this world a peaceful one.

It is very sad these days to read violent behaviours amongst students and teachers. Society demands, teachers demand and students demand, so it is a tug of war. Today, it is very difficult for teachers to handle the students, because there is no FEAR. Teachers are stressed very much.

Thank God, I am not a teacher. Since I do lot of Charitable work among Catholic schools and Orphanages, I had a opportunity to observe the behaviour of the young students first hand. Attend any function,at any school, observe the behaviour of the children during the speeches and whole programme for that matter.

I was VIP in many occassions and watching the behiour of children, I felt many a times to get out of the audience or get down of the stage and head home. Since this incident was midday meal related let me put it in perspective.

I support midday meal programme at few Catholic primery & secondary schools. So I had many a chances to observe the attitude and gratitude of the young ones during lunch time. They do not appreciate the free meal they receive, cooked and served by their teachers. The way they throw food around, plates they dump, spill food everywhere, rough handle the utensils and yell at help, anyone will loose their brain.

Teachers tell them not to enter the kitchen because hot and boiling items are around. This goes on deaf ears of these children and they forcibly enter and grab the food pans. If something happens, the blame will be on school and teachers.

Then it will awaken the society very fast and it will enlist vote bank for Politicians. Parents can't even handle, their handful of children who are with them only 5 hours of the day in average(2hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening). Still they verbaly and physically punish them. Sometime even starve them as punishment.

But Teachers have 35 students in a class for 8 hours of the day in average. Just imagine the stress they go through for meager pay they get and the abuse they receive. I am not supporting the physical punishment by teachers but parents have to take blame as even level.

I don't know how far this incident is true. If it's true,(I say this because, it's unbelieveable that we still have this kind psycopaths amongst us, portraying as teachers) then that teacher has no right, what so ever, to be a teacher.

It's gortesque. Now, let me ask a question to Girish from M'lore. Girish, suppose you have three kids, and have a similar situation at home. Will you do it to your first child the same as this teacher in question did just for asking bowl of exra rice, so that your third child don't go hungry? Putting my self in a similar situation, and keeping in mind that all the children should be fed, at worst I may refuse or I would ask the child to come later once all are served. And at best, I will definitely give an extra bowl of rice for that sweet innocent face.

I wonder reading Girish Mangalore comments... Dear Mr. Girish, the context and the feelings people have, seeing flogs mark on an innocent child. Do you beat your child in this way if they ask a cup of rice more? If there is short of rice and I was in his place, I would have kissed her cute cheek and have convinced her.

First of all let me thank Daijiworld for publishing these rural cases and touching the hearts of people from the village. I hail from Reckya village of Belthangady Taluk. I remember my own trauma from my childhood where my math teacher beat me so badly, that my legs were so swollen with cuts and bruces. I couldn't even walk home.

Yes I agree that math was not my favourite subject, but I loved the rest of the subjects especially science and English. That math teacher was so cruel not only to me but to all the children who did not like math. My mom was the only one who supported me looking at my legs bleeding so bad.

That incident caused me lot of stress emotionally. I was so phobiac that I used to sit silently and pray when that teacher would come to the class. Anyway my interests in other subjects helped me, I graduated from SDM college Ujire, postgraduated from Bangalore University, taught at MGM college Udupi and Besant Women's college Mangalore and finally teaching here in USA.

My sincere advice to the children of India is that the world is changing now. Do not get afraid to tell some one who you love what had happened at school. I am sure someone is there to cheer you and help you just like my mom who assured me during those days.

Firstly, I deplore all acts of abuse, verbal or physical, towards your student, child, spouse or those in lesser positions. And these are only a few of the abound cases of corporal punishment which are being brought to the public's attention, I'm sure.

It is of my deepest wishes that the Indian school system should not dismiss the matter as being infrequent and random, and recognise that actions of violence are in actual fact detrimental towards the developement of a child.

I mean, what kind of message are we sending them? Violence is the answer, it is valid to opt for the smallest infraction? It shouldn't matter whether the person is insolent, naughty or rebellious. There are better, more fruitful ways of dealing with situations dealing with such people, ALWAYS. It's our pro-violent subculture that opts for the easy way to get what we want.

We Indians are a lively bunch, aren't we? Excuse me is my words seem preachy and rambling. I read this story after talking about the incident with the thief being beaten by the police. I'm especially spirited and angry at the moment. Would you like to know what I believe is a sensible plan of action? the teacher should write a formal apology to both the school, the child and her parents, pay for her medical bills, and should be suspended, probably take an anger management class or two, and be taught how to handle situations that are commonly responded to with a good chappal/belt/wooden ruler beating.

And then should be allowed to teach once again under supervision. Did any readers notice i didn't write of any stupid act of revenge or violence? This is what I'm talking about! Our whole subculture is hooked on violence we can't do without it even when expressing our disapproval!

Oh and Imtiaz from London - no one has anything against the noble profession of teaching or the teachers. It's just the actions of the world's Shivanna's. No matter how badly a teacher gets ticked off, whether she's going through menopause or his family pet died, these attitudes and actions are indefensible and inexcusable.

This teacher should be terminated and should not be allowed to take any job that brings him in contact with children. It is also the duty of the school administration to see that such teachers are not hired. The kids are better off uneducated rather than having such an emotional scar for the rest of their life

Please put something in context prior to being judgmental on this incident... Of course, it is a very touching story, when you consider the hungry 10 year old girl in context of this news coverage. I still believe that, teachers are the one who develop millions of future citizens with their passion to the profession.

Teaching is a noble profession and I would not take this incident too far from what it really deserves. I am for disciplinary actions to an extent which is severe enough to send a clear message on this inappropriate conduct, but not as harsh as what is being proposed or imposed.

After all teachers do have their personal side of life and sometimes, everyday's personal challenges can put one in vulnarable and angry mood. Which I think might be the reason for this teacher to lash out on this poor kid. In a country where we let go people articulating bomb blasts and possessing AK 47. Why are we so harsh on our noble teachers?

Seeing the pity in the child's eyes and the father's face,I took her along. The rest of the children shared their food with her and the father was back in the same condition to take her home.

I believe the education system for the teachers to be reorganized in India & teach them more of human physiology & behavioral aspects. They are responsible to shape the future generation. Caning or beating is a very brutal which should be completed eliminated from the education system.

This leads to a very poor growth of a child. How terrorized that little child must be. This incident will leave a deep impact on the personality no this child through out her life. I think all of us who reacted must have been the victims of such brutality one way or another in our childhood

I wish this teacher should be suspended immidiately and her/his original certificates must be distroyed, leaving the teacher without any option to apply for such a respectful profession, as she/he is unfit for that.

Commiting crimes like this against poor is a very big mistake/sin and however she / he should answer one day to one who created us, may be very soon or later, but at the moment she / he should pay a price for her / his crime. Also, not fit for any government benefits.

Thanks to the media such stories are coming out. However, those who have criticized the teacher must answer if they have not come across any teacher picking easy target in the class....of course they did. For crying out loud, my brother was bleeding (hit on the head with the hard end of the cane) after having "disciplined" by this teacher because he could not byheart a stupid answer.

Apparently, the headmistress thought this  tough teacher who sets high targets for the students and hence "Good"..student bleeding was good according the headmistress. Of course that complaint cost my brother a year extra in the 3rd standard.
