Mangaluru, Jan 1: The office of district health and family welfare, Dakshina Kannada will conduct the first phase of pulse polio immunization programme in the district on Sunday January 17 and later on February 21.
The polio immunization will be administered to children below five years of age, informed the office of district health and family welfare on Friday January 1.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ramakrishna Rao, district health and family welfare officer said, "World Health Organisation had declared our nation as 'polio-free' on March 3, 2014. As on November 25, 2015 only in Pakistan and Afghanistan about 57 polio cases were reported. As a precautionary measure, pulse polio programme is organised in our district. In Karnataka, the last polio case was reported in 2007 and in Dakshina Kannada in 1999.
"Now, as per the direction of central and state governments, pulse polio programme will be conducted on January 17 and February 21. On first day of the programme, pulse polio will be administered in booths and during the next two to three days by visiting each house, so that polio drops are given to all children below five years of age.”
“In Dakshina Kannada district, there are a total of 1,68,947 children who are below five years. There will be 921 vaccination centres, eight mobile teams, and 16 transit vaccination units. A total of 3,828 vaccine providers and 192 supervisors have been assigned for the job," he said.
Polio vaccination centres are district health and family welfare offices, taluk health centre offices, public hospitals, city family welfare centres, community health centres, and primary health care centres.
Mission Indradhanush 2015:
Three phases of Indradhanush programme have been completed in the month of October, November and December 2015. Fourth and final round of Indradanush programme will be held on January 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11 and 12. Immunization will be done for pregnant women and for children below two years. For pregnant women anti Danurvaayu TT vaccination will be given as well.
For children below two years, diphtheria, whooping cough (Pertussis), tetanus, polio, tuberculosis, measles and hepatitis B vaccinations will be administered.
