Mangaluru: Daily wage employees demand regularisation of services, launch indefinite strike

Mangaluru, Jan 5: Karnataka State Forest Department Daily Wage Employees' Association on Tuesday January 5 launched an indefinite strike in front of Aranya Bhavan at Alape, Padil demanding regularization of services of daily wagers and those working under PCP (petty cash payment) system, apart from demanding various benefits.

The protestors marched from Padil junction to Aranya Bhavan where the agitation was held.

Addressing the protest, state president of the Association A M Nagaraju said, "There are many daily wagers who are working from over 15 years in anticipation of getting their jobs regularized. They are not getting minimum wages, additional wages, and nor are they included under the Karnataka Daily Wage Employees Welfare Act. They are not getting pension and social security."

District chief conservator of forest Hanumanthappa who arrived at the spot said that as per the laws, daily wagers cannot be regularized as they are under contract basis. However, the protestors were not convinced and verbal clash ensued.

Speaking to reporters, Hanumanthappa explained, "Those working from many years are under contract basis and they cannot be regularised. We have tried to regularise their work, but there is no proof to say that they been working from 15 years. So we collected their signaturs and handwriting samples and sent them to the forest department seeking regularisation of their services, but the department said that handwriting cannot be considered as proof. It is not up to us to regularize their services. We have done whatever we could.

"The workers who get daily wages are paid through FAC 63 vouchers and labourers working under contract under head mazdoor system and outsourcing. The wages go directly to the bank accounts. There is a government order that no one should appoint permanent labourers and if any officer does so, he would be held responsible for it. In 2012 the government issued an order that those working from over 10 years will get extra Rs 1000. We have already sent the list and the proofs to the government and their names have been included under Welfare Act. These protestors have no documents," he said.

    If the Govt. cannot regularise the services of those who are working on contract and daily wages basis then let them give some financial benefits as per the Govt. order and also other benefits like leave etc. to those who have put in more than 10 years service in the department. This may be considered on humanitarian grounds.

    It is so pity that the people who have been working for more than 15 years are without any benefits and social security facilities.They are not even receiving normal daily wages like others.It is ridiculous that even their services are not regularized.That means they are working like animals without any benefits.They are also human beings,they too have their family obligations,responsibilities like any other individual.I request concerned authorities,departments to consider them as permanent employees with all the facilities and social securities benefits,pension,ESI etc.Don't treat them like animals.Their sponsor should support their demand by producing authenticated proofs of their working in their company.Employees are the real assets of the company.Don't try to betray them,deprive of their rights.They are duly held eligible for their rights.God bless them
