Kundapur, Jan 6: A man, who behaved as mad, robbed gold from a house at Korgi Hasamata near here and fled after attacking three people with knife in the wee hours on January 5.
Ranjith Shetty (27) is the person accused.
As per details, Ranjith Shetty acted like he was mentally disturbed for the past many days. He lived near Kustu Shetty's house. On Tuesday night he knocked on the door of Kustu Shetty at about 3 am on Tuesday morning, January 5 saying that he was suffering from stomach pain.
The inmates of the house though refused to open the door in the beginning, later opened it out of sympathy. The suspect who entered the house attacked three of the inmates with the knife brought by him. He also asked them to sign on a paper saying that he was not responsible for the robbery. All the inmates signed the paper after they were threatened.
Ranjith threatened the neighbours who saw him when he locked the house from outside while fleeing. He allegedly snatched their mobiles and fled from the place.
The neighbours informed about the incident to Thekkatte friends circle who came with the ambulance and took the injured to the hospital. The injured are Kustu Shetty, his wife Koragamma Shetty and daughter Chandravathi Shetty. The seriously injured Koragamma Shetty has been admitted to Manipal hospital while the other two of them have been admitted to Koteshwar N R Acharya hospital.
Police circle inspector P M Diwaker with personnel visited the place. Later the police arrested the accused Ranjith Shetty near Koteshwar while he was trying to sell the gold to a shop.
A police case stands registered at Kundapur Police station. People said Ranjith had attacked his grandmother aged 90 years in the past for gold and cash. His mother and sister who feared him left the house and started living elsewhere.
