Mangaluru, Jan 8: Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo on Friday January 8 visited various areas in and around the city along with ACP traffic Uday Nayak, MCC commissioner H S Gopalkrishna and other MCC officials and directed the officials concerned to take necessary steps to ease the traffic in the city.

J R Lobo inspected major junctions of the city like Hampankatta, Jyothi, Dr Ambedkar circle and Nantoor junction. He instructed the officials to lay interlocks and provide as much parking facility as possible in the city and construct footpaths on busy roads so that it is easy for the pedestrians to walk and for easy movement of traffic. He also instructed the MCC officials to consult the traffic department and shift some bus stops.

Addressing media persons Lobo said, "We have taken up this drive to ease the traffic problem in the city. A team of MCC officials will inspect in and around the city once in 15 days and check the maintenance of the city roads and irregularities if any. The traffic department has placed a proposal for installing 42 speedbreakers to avoid accidents. The MCC along with the traffic department will take neccesary action in this regard. MCC will also shift a few bus stops on the instructions of the traffic department.

"Construction of footpaths will also be taken up and in this regard we have sent proposal to the state government. Some free lefts will be introduced in places like Ambedkar circle. The traffic department is celebrating 'Traffic Week' on January 18 at 10 am, in which all the officials from Mescom, BSNL, MCC, police and other departments will take part. It is an opportunity for people who are interested to give suggestions on how to improve the traffic conditions in the city. This is not a one day's drive, it is a continuous process and will take at least 6 months for the situation to change," he added.

"Work on the construction of the concrete road from Shivbhag to Nanthoor will be taken up shortly and dividers will also be installed. All this will help in easing the traffic in the city," he said.

On being asked about the shortage of staff in the police department, he said, "There is shortage of staff in the police department but the traffic wardens have been really helpful. We tend to criticize, but people who can and are capable should try to serve as traffic wardens at least for one hour and thereby help in improving the traffic condition in the city."

Really its a good and appropriate step taken by our MLA J.R.Lobo. Definitely our main places should be provided footpaths for the pedestrians. Our bus stops like Bendur well, Balmatta opposite juice center, Karangalpady needs to be shifted as these bus stops create nuisance and create traffic jams. Meantime the Pump well bus stand be constructed so that the buses should not enter the City and should not go upto State Bank side because we always see there arses chaotic situation due to heavy flow of buses. Better our MLA visit such places often and see that the present situation is improved.

The worst road is Balikashrama Road , Kankanady. Inspite of " No Parking " Traffic Board people are just parking vehicles and blocking the road. The police are not penalising these vehicle owners.

Politicians, corporation and police in Mangalore do not have the necessary skill to solve traffic problem.
They can only create no entries, more "oneways"and more traffic blocks to inconvenience traffic. Wherever 4 wheelers find some space to park, the police come running and put up barriers to prevent them.
    Let them explain:
    1. How they allow road repair of Balmatta Road and Don Bosco lane simultaneously, (without even a sign board at entry point) knowing fully well that these are major connecting roads from Falnir?
    2. How come the deep step between concreted part of the road and remaining plain footpath part at Milagres Cross road has not been filled in even if many years have passed after completing concrete work? Every time the vehicle coming from Falnir takes a U-turn at this point, there is danger of vehicle falling in the ditch. This is the case with every intersection of concreted road with remaing part.
    3. What is the use of concreting the Kardri market junction road and creating a messy puddle of post holes immediately towards Nanthoor?
    4. Small car owners could park the vehicles in unused islands opposite Town Hall, Janatha Bazar, Ganapathy High School etc. The police thought that this is the best opportunity to trouble them and have put barriers to prevent parking and kept the place unused.
    5. Everywhere there is plenty of place created for autorickshaw parking without any control. Who decides the need and who allocates the space??

Dear Abdulla, the suggestions you given is really appreciable, but our peoples will never obey any rules and regulations as in Dubai. First let them mark lanes properly (Forget about hard shoulders) and make the ppls to follow lane driving.

The "Traffic Week" in Mangalore should pave way for various new ideas and thoughts for future pathways throughout the City and beyond. These pathways should be planned well and also need be maintained regularly so that thousands of pedestrians can make use of the pathways for various short distant and long distant walks. A good footpath from Milagres Church in Hampankatte to Rosario Church via Nehru Maidan is a classic example how and why a good footpath can help thousands of pedestrians to walk safely on a daily basis without using the busses or even rickshaws. It can also be a pleasant daily walk that can provide bodily exercise as well for the rich as well as the poor - everyone included.

Once the footpath is well maintained and well utilized, people will appreciate the daily walks and also enjoy the beauty of the surroundings. Then we can experiment these footpaths in many areas of Mangalore.

Regular maintenance and upkeep of these footpaths with clean and green surrounding is equally important. All of these privileges obviously cost money, and the money has to be generated thru City taxes. By encouraging people to utilize footpaths for walking, bus stops can also be eliminated, and that will also avoid traffic pollution, auto emission, congestion as well as noise and destruction.

All of the above needs proper planning, proper discipline and constant surveillance. The market road narrow lanes should only be utilized for pedestrian walking, and even the rickshaws should be banned, so that people can safely and conveniently walk from place to place and enjoy the surroundings.

Some of these suggestions and messages might appear to be tough, but that's the only way to make the City of Mangalore a beautiful place to dwell and enjoy the beauty that obviously prevails in our home town. Eventually, should we should be able to walk from Jeppoo to Hampankatte or from Bijey to Hampankatte without depending on anyone. "Dhanyawadh"
