Mangaluru: Invest DK meet - Investments worth Rs 12,000 crore proposed

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Jan 12: Dakshina Kannada district administration in association with the commerce and industries department and district industries on Tuesday January 12 organized 'Invest Dakshina Kannada', a investors' meet at TMA Pai Conventional Hall here. The event was held as part of the upcoming 'Invest Karnataka-2016' to be held in Bengaluru in February.

As many as 33 investors have come forward to invest Rs 12,096.35 crore in the district, providing employment opportunities to 4,665 people. Among the investors are NRI entrepreneur Dr B R Shetty, who would be setting up a boat club and a wellness spa, and MRPL, whose investments include expasion to 1025 acres, long terminal at NMPT and upgradation of refineries.

After inaugurating the meet, district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai said, "People from this district have used their talents to invest in many parts of the world. Entrepreneurs from the district are eager to invest in Dakshina Kannada.

"Along with the development, environmental protection is very important. Social harmony is very essential to attract investors and entrepreneurs from around the world. People should ponder on this," he said.

"Politicians should not be investors, and investors should not be politicians. Only then can real development take place," he added.

On this occasion district in-charge ministers honoured investors who came forward to invest in the district.

Bharath Lal Meena, chief secretary for higher education said, "Dakshina Kannada district has its own potentiality. This district has all the four modes of connectivity and hence it should become the 'gateway' of Karnataka. Small countries like Singapore and Hong Kong are competing globally. Many investors are ready to invest in this district but the thing is, we need to attract them. Within five years each individual from every home will be employed because of these investments."

MLA J R Lobo in his presidential address said, "I do not think this investors meet will be successful until we work wholeheartedly for development. The people of this district are born entrepreneurs but you need to provide opportunity.

"There is IT Park in Mudipu but no proper connectivity. Development takes place when we (government) provide electricity, water and road. The government should attract investors and provide opportunities with adequate infrastructure," he added.

"Social menace like immoral rowdyism hinders tourism. When there is good communication along with electricity and water, development is possible. There is no meaning to development unless and until we work wholeheartedly," Lobo said.

MLA Mohiuddin Bava, mayor Jacintha Vijaya Alfred, deputy mayor Purushottam Chitrapur, MUDA chairman Ibrahim Kodijal, ZP president Asha Thimappa Gowda, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim, ZP CEO I P Shrividya, president of KCCI Ram Mohan Pai Maroor, joint director of district industries Gokuldas Nayak and others were present.

Though the proposals look good, without any clear advantage whatsoever when compared to similar cities like Pune, Navi Mumbai etc., all these proposals simply look like paper tigers!!!

Also one should not forget that there are many smart and greedy groups who take advantage and pocket large swathes of land at peanut rates with big rosy promises!!

Without basic infrastructure & basic necessities in place no investment will come to DK. Religious and political unrest is the second hindrance which causes poor investment grown.
Ramanath Rai should first find a way and solution to the already existing problem age old problem of proper drinking water, Electricity, proper roads, efficient and safe public transport, drainage system to name a few. Unless these basic necessities are put in place, no investments will come to DK. Probably one more Reddy will emerge from somewhere to take advantage of the situation and burgle the govt. treasury. Nothing more than that will happen from these Investment meet.

Mangalore has become very popular for all the wrong reasons. Thanks to the fringe elements of the BJP. Nobody wants to buy an apartment or invest in South Kanara. Thanks to the local politicians as well for this state of affairs.

Jossey Sir needs to be enlightened that the Congress government, when in power, had permitted FDI (foreign direct investment) through private limited companies and such franchises. Resultantly, Coke, Pepsi, KFC, McDonalds, etc mint money from India's bore well water and maida, without having to publish their financials and repatriate undisclosed profits back home abroad. Modi is in the process of rationalizing it and only then will be come to know the transparencies like in Nestle (Maggi), Suzuki, etc.
So, Jossey Saldanha, learn the basics before spewing vengeance all the time.

I really hope this comes true. Our youth are very well qualified, but no jobs for their qualification. even though Mangaluru is where their heart lies they have to go out of their home on the look out for a livelihood. May more companies invest in our beautiful city, creating jobs and employment which is the need of the hour.

Mangalore has potentials but infra and district administration is far beyond acceptable levels. Our Ministers and MLA's are busy in cutting ribbons and attending functions organized by various communities and associations. The classic example of Bajal under bridge and our town hall renovation projects. MCC members are blaming each other and those two national parties ruled the MCC are responsible. Roads are concreeted and the footpath left unattended. If any one travelled from Circuit house towards kadri kambla you can see the edges of concreete road having ditch for the last 4 years means the footpath incomplete. There are many places like death ponds. Our elected representatives eyes are closed until some one dies or some organization starts agitation no actions from concerned authorities. Blame games are played between BJP and congress, The moral policing and antisocial elements are challenging administartion looks like the government does not have any control over law and order. How investors come forward to start ventures? no proper roads, no electricity and investor friendly policy from the government. First of all Mangalore does not have working class people, with current government policy and all Bhagyas made people to be lazy. Agriculture totally collapsed in the district. The land conversion law (9/11)put hurdles to small property owners neither they cultivate nor dispose to developers. We have good educated populations in Mangalore and every year huge number of fresh graduates comes out of university kindly promote suitable industry to accommodate them. The resort/ SPA or refinery will not give much job oppourtunity for our people. We can not promote tourism because of loose administration & moral policing.Draw a proper strategy of development with the help of experts and intelectuals of our distirict. These Melas of political babus will not help to develop our city because other party leaders are waiting to derail the process for their advantage.

Well articulated. We need engineering projects and not tourism. You cannot have locals who are technically qualified searching jobs outside the city and rich outsider enjoy at our beaches and spas.

Investments proposed in Dakshina Kannada to the tune of over twelve thousand crores can obviously create lots of eye browse and bring lots of negative feelings in the very beginning. This is obvious in every Society in every corner of the world.

Investment of this magnitude requires careful planning, careful organizing and careful implementation. All of these mighty investments involve people from all walks of life. But so long as the responsible Government officials added with Civic authorities including Chamber of Commerce officials become involved, there will always be an opportunity for progressive thinking and progressive pathway for eventual reality. Initially, there will be room for corruptive ideas and self interests to blossom, but so long as responsible people with the help and guidance from noble people such as Dr. B. R. Shetty come in sight, there will be a smooth and harmonious passage ahead for our beloved City called Mangalore to earn the desired goals.

Let us therefore not ponder too much on the negativism in the beginning of our journey, but lets keep our mind and heart wide open and welcome all the responsible officials to come forward with bright ideas and then follow the pathway for progressive ideas to flow one after another.

Projects of this size brings new job opportunities, new ideas and most importantly the willingness to listen to others, learn from others and make good things possible. If required, bring an outside "Consulting Group" to review the master plans and seek independent opinions.

We wish best of success to all those that are on the forefront of this massive thought towards Mangalore, and we pray that unity and diversity will be the stepping stones for a long and durable future our home town. "Dhanyawadh"

That means, after five years there will be no bandh, rasta roko, gerao, protests, attacks, immoral rowdyism etc, because everyone will be busy at their work?
