Mangaluru, Jan 12: The 27th National Road Safety Week was inaugurated at Police Bhavan here on Tuesday January 12.

Prior to the inauguration, a colourful rally was held from Lighthouse Hill to Police Bhavan in which NCC, scouts and guides and students participated, holding placards to create awarness on road safety. The rally was flagged off by district incharge minister Ramanath Rai. The new rule on mandatory helmet for pillion riders also formally came into effect.

Delivering the keynote address, assistant regional transport officer (RTO) G S Hegde said that licences of those who speak on mobile phones or violate other traffic rules will be suspended for a period of three months.

"The Karnataka government has implemented new transport policy in the state. As per the orders of the Supreme Court, a few strict guidelines will be followed. Licences will be suspended for three months if the driver/rider is found speaking over the phone while driving/riding. The three-month suspension applies even for those jumping the signals, transporting people on goods lorries and drunken driving. Hence people have to be careful about violating the rules.

"Today, 125 two-wheerlers and 40-50 cars are registered every day in the city. Hence there is a drastic rise in the traffic density. The RTO has shifted its fitness inspection unit to Bangrakulur. In the coming days a week-long training programme will also be conducted for every driver who comes to renew his licence so as to make him aware of the new rules," he said.

MLA of Mangaluru South constituency J R Lobo called upon everyone to be traffic wardens. "It is easy to comment about traffic issues. If most of us work for at least an hour in the week as traffic wardens, we can contribute to solving the issue.

"It has become a bad habit to honk unnecessarily. Especially, the buses moving through the Balmatta area have been a reason for noise pollution. If each one of us exercises patience, then these issues can be solved," he opined.

He also pointed out that traffic constables at Nantoor circle are found using mobile phones which is resulting in traffic jams and suggested banning usage of mobile phones during duty hours.

Superintendent of police of Dakshina Kannada Dr S D Sharanappa said that people who survive accidents are better at following traffic rules. "Be it wearing helmet or wearing the seatbelt, people are least bothered about their safety. We have to keep in mind that life can be lived only once. We should not make our parents and dependents regret the accident we meet with.

"In a recent meeting with the senior citizens' association, we heard many complaints of harsh behavior from drivers and conductors of private buses in the district. I request the vice-president of the Canara Bus Owners' Association to conduct soft skills training for drivers and conductors of private buses," the SP said.

The MD of Karnataka Bank released awareness pamphlets while J R Lobo released a booklet on traffic awareness. The DCPs of Mangaluru commissionerate Shantharaju and Dr Sandeep Patil released an awareness calender.

DCP (crime) Dr Sandeep Patil welcomed the gathering.

Senior traffic warden of the city Joe Gonsalves, vice-president of Canara Bus Owners' Association K M Narayan and others were present.

Mr Diego Britto, you have mentioned that High Beam light should not be allowed. Regarding this problem,I have spoken to Mr Khan RTO about a year back. His answer was that He is not having enough Inspectors to check the problem. I am sure every one has seen that many Vehicles, specially Innovas are installing extra High Beam Lights. Night time drivers turn on these extra High Beam lights plus original head lights. How in the world we can drive facing these bright light, which causes blindness. It is time for all Drivers and bike riders to rise up and remove these extra lights.
Mr George D'Sa,you have a point regarding poor person death. This is what politicians wanted because they will get the attention and publicity when they visit grieving family of the dead. They will give some money to show the Public how kind they are to People in tragedy. Also their party members will use the opportunity to garnish votes and rob part of that grant amount, given in kindness.
Look at the pity of People from Niddele area in Maroli. These People including little school Children walk on Highway among the
speeding vehicles. While Multi Axle trucks park day and night on footpaths near Kankanady Police Stations. I have removed them few times including yesterday by contacting Police Commissioner. But today they are back again. District Minister drives near Maroli on highway. But He dozes off while passing Kankanady Police Station while passing these Trucks. I hope All folks from Maroli,Niddel area, kindly remove these trucks for safety of you and your loved ones.

Sir I applaud your individual actions of alerting the RTO etc.

I feel more of us need to do the same- however there should be another way.
It appears to me that any road/ modification etc is being done- is there a way for the citizens to demand - a "townhouse meeting"? What I mean by that is the incidences of glaring violations due to conflicts of interests involving corrupt people- cannot go on without public empowerment and that is a mechanism to air our views and recording them. I am not very knowledgeable in these matter but I would appreciate your input in this matter.

There is no need of road safety week in a small city like Mangalore, most important is the roads and footpaths should be in place. I mean the infrastructure should be constructed scientifically and also maintained. Look at the first photo were the D.C. and other dignitaries are standing the footpath and road are almost at the same level. Surprisingly there are no cars parked there. The authorities should look into constructing good roads and footpaths.

Speed of buses need to be controlled.
Vehicles must not be permitted to drive with high beams around the city, they are extremely blinding.

It is an excellent move. Traffic week is observed every year in western countries, middle east, far east and gulf countries. It is the best way to educate the general public on road safety and driving behaviour.

Apart from distributing safety pamphlets, it would be desired to display the mangled cars, two wheelers etc. on strategic locations in the city. Seeing these accident cars,a fear would imprint in one's heart always.

Hope this traffic weeks extended through out the state.

It is a good initiative about road safety. It is a disciplineless driving in Mangalore by majority of the motorists. RTO should ensure that all driving schools should teach traffic discipline first and then driving.Driving schools ignore teaching traffic discipline they teach only "driving without discipline". Teaching traffic discipline can avert lots of accidents as well as traffic jams.

The traffic lights at Balmatta circle is creating a huge traffic block and sometimes the traffic queue is upto vas lane. These lights are creating more problems. It was better and smoother without them. Who's brilliant idea was it to have it ? How much of the tax payers money was wasted on it ?

How well we have been taught traffic rules? Did authorities check eligibility of drivers before issuing the driver's license? What is the use of urging drivers now to follow the traffic rules?

Firstly Police & RTO should control the movement of buses on highways and city limits by introducing strict penalty for reckness drivers. Licence should be cancelled for such busses which causes nuisense to the society. Only then Road Safety campaign will be successfull. Elderly and old citizens of Mangalore cann't even think of getting into a bus to go to their destination as both drivers and conductors behave there is no end to them. Punish them with huge fines and give them training how to behave withthe public. IT's very important sir.

It is very interesting to hear MLA talking. He is the one should do the road safety talk and advise Us!!! He starts concrete road and stops halfway and starts new road for publicity purpose. He started Mallikatte Nanthoor road and stopped at Tollgate near Jimmy's Store. It is life threat to riders as well as drivers. It is a misery for Pregnant Women,Senior Citizens,Little Children,People with back problems and other Health problems. If He could not finish, question is why He started the job first of all. Is it another avenue for Corruption?
He started Mallikatte Bendoor Concrete road designed by stupid engineers and stopped halfway. I request well educated people of Mangalore to look into the layout of this road. Also I request Lokayukta to investigate if Corruption is involved. This road is making 90 degree turn near Kadri Neuro Center where many a times Patients are unloaded from Ambulances. This is a blind view point where sooner or later, will happen a accident with deaths.
I firmly think this 90 degree turn was designed by a Corrupt engineer to help multi storied building close by,so that to avoid vehicle movement next to complex. Concrete road is raised with a intention to isolate that section close to building for vehicle movement.
Look at all those banners disrupting the atention of drivers near Nanthoor Circle area leading to accident. All these big safety talkers do not see this problem in name of religion.

Mr.Joe Dsouza : One has to wait for a poor chap to die for these law makers to open their eyes. Everything is politics now. Besides that see the time wasted on cutting ribbons and speeches which nobody listens to. Also the money wasted to drive upto the venue in the MLA Innova car.

I disagree with you Sir. There is less value to human lives. I do not think we have the cause and effect paradigm in practice. We believe more on fate.

As the song " Blowing in the wind goes..." Just how many deaths would they .... that too many people have died? The answer my friend, is blowing in the wind.

We have surgeons that fix our hearts , other organs. People are ready to donate their organs in case they die in road accidents. Prevention is better than cure- is slowly picking up - long way to go still.

PEOPLE ARE PROTESTING AGAINST HELMET RULE. I am very skeptical of these Road sense drives. A 2 step road test and enforcement will be more effective along with the " Road awareness drive" Otherwise this is nothing but NEERI mele Madidha Homa.

Welcome move.I appeal to the public strictly to adhere to Road safety/traffic.Special request to drivers of two wheeler and auto-rickshaw,who are the one responsible for reckless driving and reason for accidents. Also my sincere request to private and city bus drivers, not to drive recklessly and stop in between the roads suddenly other than the designated bus stands just for the sake of one passenger or so,putting others at risks/danger.Unnecessary honking also should be strictly prohibited.Rude behaviour/attitude of the driver and conductors should be stopped and should be given proper training before giving them the charge of driving in full scale.Driving may be thrill but it will kill you.Life is precious and enjoyed once and if it is lost means, lost for ever resulting dependants, family members to regret.Wish the road safety week a grand success with the co-operation of public.Jai Mangalore,Jai Karnataka.Bholo Maata Ki Jai.
