Udupi, Jan 15: State health minister U T Khader on Friday January 15 paid a surprise visit to the district government hospital at Ajjarkad here and took the administration to task on finding irregularities in attendance, maintanence and other areas.

Local MLA Pramod Madhwaraj, city municipal council president P Yuvaraj and other local leaders accompanied the minister.

When the minister entered the hospital, he was surprised not to find the district surgeon or any doctor in the premises. Once the intimation was sent to the district surgeon, the minister started interacting with the patients and the public who had arrived after hearing about the news.

District surgeon Dr Mahendra and four doctors came after 10 minutes of the ministers' arrival. U T Khader took Dr Mahendra to task for his and others doctors' absence and irregularities at the hospital. He even showed a broken window glass to the doctors. and also took note of the fact the surgeon not wearing the white coat.

The public who spoke to the minister complained that the hospital was not managed efficiently and the patients were either sent to private hospitals or to Wenlock hospital in Mangaluru. They said even taluk hospitals got more patients than this hospital.

When there was a complaint four months back that the hospital experienced shortage of staff, new appointments were made to fill the vacancies. Presently the hospital has 18 doctors and 49 nurses.

The district surgeon and 4 doctors were called for a meeting later with the minister. The minister asked them to hold at least one meeting in a month with the local MLA and other people concerned. He promised them that shortage of medicine if any would be addressed. "When you work sincerely and efficiently, people will automatically show support to you and the hospital will become popular," Khader told the hospital staff.

MLA Pramod Madhwaraj said that complaint box should be properly maintained and his phone number could be displayed on the box. "If any more complaints come, I will ask the minister to suspend the district surgeon. I have a good name throughout the state. I cannot see a hospital being mismanaged in my own constituency," he said.

U T Khader speaking to the media said, "The Paryaya on January 18 is a state event. I want all the government employees to be alert and active. Bike ambulances stationed in Ullal and Mangaluru will be sent here. Health points will be installed in three places. All the arrangements will be made to look after the well-being of tourists during the Paryaya."

District health officer Dr Rohini was present.

A doctor spends the best part of his life studying for the degree. On completion, he takes the Hippocratic oath for the patient care and not to look after the broken window or the dirty toilet.
People complain about Drs taking bribe. Is there any area where there is no bribe taken? you name it and it is there. Mr. Kader is doing this for cheap popularity. He has an axe to grind against Drs. Has he by any chance improved the working and living conditions for doctors in these setups? It is for this simple reason that doctors hesitate joining government set ups because of frequent and unreasonable interference by these politicians and their cronies.

The District Surgeon or the CMO is responsible for the hospital’s management also and he is paid above other doctors. So it’s his duty to see that the hospital is well maintained.

    Well done Sir.

My advice to Mr. U.T.Khader is just cancel the doctors' certificates & depromote them as male & female nurses so that they may earn their living which could be an example to all the doctors throughout the country.

who want to become doctor & join government service ?

who is hard working a doctor or minister?

and no patient in government hospital will say that the service is good !

after studying for one decade to become a MD/MS doctor, the doctors job is to repair the broken glass / giving certificates/supervising toilet cleaning/etc, not doing surgery...

why doctors are not keen in joining government service ? the above photos are telling the answer.

any how well done minister khader...

Surprise visit to government hospital by the state health minister U.T.Khader is a good step and welcome move to find out the irregularities, mismanagement and loopholes in the hospital. Periodic surprise visits by the minister or his subordinates should be conducted.
But one thing is sure that this is not new but prevailing in almost all the government hospitals. The staff who are working there, are the ones who boast themselves that they are the owners of the hospitals. Whether minister pays surprise visit, call emergency meeting by calling all the concerned doctors, staff, these kinds of irregularities, trends will continue forever once the minister leaves from there. Addressing this kind of irregularities, mismanagement and loopholes is a herculean task. Sometimes we need to bribe the doctors and staffs in order to get better treatment or guidance/advice. Some doctors are openly asking for the money to get good treatment. This is what happened to me recently in Wenlock hospital, Mangaluru.I advice that in order to bring it under control to certain level this kind of irregularities, malpractices, mismanagement and loopholes, engage/recruit somebody as an internal auditor and conduct surprise visits frequently and punish the guilty.
Besides local elected representatives like MLA Pramodh Madhwaraj should pay a visit to all the hospitals in order to plug out the irregularities in the hospitals. Should not sit at home and comment in front of the health minister when he visits the hospitals. That his moral duty than to suggest to keep a complaint box and check it regularly. Being an elected representative, he must provide all the feedbacks/information to the health minister before he visits the hospitals in the best interest of enhancing the image of the hospitals.
