Mangalore, Sep 5: The Child Welfare Committee of the district (CWC) rescued 3 child labourers in Dakshina Kannada district, with the cooperation of Odanadi Organization of Mysore, on Wednesday September 5.
The rescued children have been identified as Ratna, Mangala and Geeta who hail from Mangalore and Mysore respectively. All three of them come from tribal community in remote villages like Kanakanahalli in H D Kote taluk and other remote villages.
The Odanadi organization has been involved in the welfare of tribal communities in remote areas of Mysore district. The institution learnt of a child trafficking racket being prevalent in Dakshina Kannada. When they went deep into the case, they came to know that a certain Cheluvavva was involved in the racket and was the linchpin.
The two child labourerers Sudha and Parvathi escaped from Mangalore, owing to the harassments by their employer here. They later contacted Odanadi and informed about the entire issue.
After closely studying the matter Odanadi came forward to save the other child labourers who were facing similar plight. Accordingly they informed the CWC in Mangalore after coming to know that a child was brought to city without the knowledge of her mother.
The activists of Odanadi organization, headed by Stanley Parashu, reached Mangalore on Wednesday along with the broker, Cheluvavva and escaped child labourers, Sudha and Parvathi.
The operation was started at 2.30 pm along with police, CWC members, Geo D’Silva and Renny D’Souza.
The first child labourer was rescued from the house of a certain Satish at Mulihitlu. When the team reached their house, the house owner tried to hide Ratna by pulling her across the wall of the house compound. When Ratna was finally traced, it was found that her toes were badly damaged owing to working in the dirty water for long hours.
The second child, Geetha was rescued at Koppalakad near Bondel, from certain, Reni Pilles’ house. The third child Mangala was employed in one Abubaker's house in Vittal. When the CWC members, contacted him over the phone, he agreed to handover her to CWC. Accordingly he dropped her near the gate of Prajna Counselling Centre, at about 5 pm and vanished in haste.
Mangala said that, Cheluvavva brought her here without informing her mother. Moreover, she accused that the employers have not paid her any salary for the work she has done there.
Stanley Parashu, director of Odanadi said that there are many cases lodged against Cheluvavva for child trafficking. Moreover she has been imprisoned for few years on charges of child trafficking in the past. "But she has not yet changed her ways," he added.
These children are initially brought from remote villages across Mysore with the purpose of domestic work. But when they are grown up, many of them are forced to take up prostitution. The intermediaries like Cheluvavva, play important role in such unhealthy activities. The child labourer or their parent doesn’t get any worthy monetary benefits from doing this job. However the intermediaries really exploit both child and parents, for their own gains, he opined.
