Udupi, Jan 20: Following the death of a four-year-old girl who was run over by a bus at Shirva late evening on Tuesday January 19, the locals on Wednesday January 20 staged a protest over the lack of facilities and shortage of staff in Shirva community health centre.

Mahin Taj (4), daughter of Javed Badshah and Parvin Taj from Shirva who stay in Mysuru. The bus ran over Mahin while she was waiting with her grandparents near Shirva mosque to catch a bus to Moodubelle. When her body was taken to the community health centre in Shirva, the doctor had allegedly initially refused to conduct post-mortem, and locals had alleged that due to shortage of staff and facilities, the health centre was not equipped to handle emergency cases.

Addressing the protest on Wednesday, the protestors claimed that the health centre had only one health officer, and no doctors were available in emergency situations. "The ambulance generator does not work, and the electric lights in the premises have remained non-functional from several years. Both kitchen and toilets are dirty and stink. The health centre should be renovated and fully equipped without any delay," they said.

Health officer of the Shirva community health centre Dr Jagadish refuted charges that there was delay in conducting the post-mortem and said, "The health centre has only one doctor. When the girl who was hit by the bus was brought to the centre, she was already dead. I immediately conducted the post-mortem and handed over the body to the family."

Udupi district health officer (DHO) Dr Rohini arrived at the spot and spoke to the protestors. "The government has recently appointed three private doctors. As they are private, it is not possible to put pressure on them. Solutions to all problems will be sought very soon and everything will be set right," she assured.

When the locals pointed out that the headlights of the 108 ambulance was not functioning from a long time, the DHO summoned the ambulance driver and took him to task.

Dr Rohini also accepted a memorandum submitted by the protestors.

Photo Nos. 1, 4 and 6 shows how backward Shirva is. Just look at the house. It looks a typical haunted out of one of the Ramsay pictures. The locales too seem to be having a ball of a time. Just sitting and gossiping without much work to do.

The same buildings are standing from many years (40 plus years sure) and the status also same 1 doctor from so many years. Most of the time doctors are not available.

RIP little Mahin Taj. May her soul rest in peace. Well done by locals of Shirva for protesting and demanding better facilities at Community Health Centre Shirva. It is one of the oldest Govt. Health Centre. But sadly no development has been done other than repair/ construction of one unit few years back. With help of local community leaders/old student associations few facilities improved few years back. It is high time now. Believe me Shirva and surrounding places seriously lack good health center/hospital facilities. Only few private small clinics which are of no use during emergencies. Shirva definitely require one good health centre/hospital. Many lives have lost so far while taking the patients to hospitals to udupi/manipal which takes apprx. 30-40 minutes of travel.

It is really a high time, Govt. Take action on the same, in-spite of local financial support Govt. does not do anything to improve upon such a old hospital. Please do not give any more excuses sir. (Govt. personnel who are responsible to improve this facility). Act now. We are very much greatful to you. Otherwise next time you will have a more strong protest automatically. Do not wait until that moment.

people should protest against the poor roads and the miscreants who donot obey the traffic rules and who are dangerous to the safety of fellow users of road as well. Otherwise we are proving that the kannada proverb " yettige jwara bandare yemmege bare hakidaranthe" is created for us only.

    People,

    Is this hospital or Goshala?

when I was a student of St.Mary's Junior college, I could see this hospital through the school windows...it looks same...looks like nobody cleaned and painted it in last 25 years...

I think people of Shirva must do a "Kar Seva"...demolish it completely and rebuild it...

    Where is Khader???

I know for sure that Shirvaites are financially stinking rich but miserly in donation for any good cause. And they call Shirva as mini Dubai since almost every household working member from here works there and the neighbouring GCC. Can't understand why this backward class old structures still exist? During my recent visit to Shirva, I was stunned to see the complete modernised facelift of the old fish market converted into a new spanking complex in a rapid time. One can easily gauge the partiality adopted by the Gram Panchayat in modifying old structures not directly under the jurisdiction of the Government. I have a feeling that some overseas good souls may have sponsored for the total new facelook of the fish market.
