Mysuru, Jan 21: Parents of a newborn disinterred the buried body of their stillborn child to prove to the police that a newborn found from a toilet of Cheluvamba Hospital in the city was not theirs. The incident occurred in the city on Wednesday January 20. The couple, who hail from Nanjanagud, held protest against the hospital authorities for making false allegations against them after producing the corpse before the police.
Roopa, wife of Murty from Krishnapura in Nanjangud taluk had been admitted into Cheluvamba Hospital here on Sunday after she went into labour. Roopa gave birth to a stillborn male baby, which was premature, on Tuesday. The doctors had handed over the mortal remains of the baby covered in plastic sheet. The couple took the stillborn home and conducted the funeral.
In the meantime, a premature newborn female baby was found from one of the toilets in this hospital. The hospital management, who found the baby, filed complaint in Devaraja police station, expressing suspicion that the baby might belong to Murty and Roopa couple. The police, who took up investigation, called up the couple and instructed them to present themselves in the police station.
Murty, who came to the police station, was interrogated by the police. They refused to believe that the baby found in toilet was not his. They threatened to register case and arrest the couple unless they bring the buried body of the baby to the police station. Murty went back to his native place, and came back to the police station with the corpse. After they showed the body to Devaraja police, information was also conveyed to hospital management.
The couple, supported by relatives and villagers, held protest demonstration thereafter in front of the hospital, expressing anguish at the way Cheluvamba hospital authorities had dealt with the case, and mentally tortured them because of their own irresponsibility. They also filed complaint in Devaraja station against the hospital staff for mentally harassing them.
It is gathered that on the same day, funeral of a stillborn baby of Chandregowda-Shobha couple from Mudugere taluk in K R Pet taluk was performed. The hospital is now contemplating to conduct DNA test to establish the parentage of the orphaned newborn. To be able to do that, they want to dig out the body of the other child too.
