Udupi: Escape of undertrials - DIG visits Hiriadka jail

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (UM)

Udupi, Jan 25: A day after the escape of two undertrials from Hiriadka jail came to light, DIG (prisons) of north division T P Sesha visited the jail and took stock of the situation.

DIG Sesha questioned the jail officials and inspected the premises.

He said that security failure on the part of the jail officials enabled the undertrials to escape.

"There is shortage of staff in this jail, and also in jails across the state. There are 123 inmates in this jail but not enough staff to keep a watch on them," he said.

It is learnt that on January 23 at around 3 pm, 10 inmates of the jail had been taken out of their cells to clean the jail premises ahead of the Republic Day celebrations, under the supervision of jail official Sridhar Prabhu. At around 6 pm, when they were taken back into the cells and attendance was called, two of the undertrials, Ashok alias Babru and Kumar Gosavi, were found to have gone missing.

A hunt for the undertrials is on.

Mr. Sridhar Prabhu, it is your mistake. You can not supervise 10 persons then you are not fit for the post. Please retire & give the chance to right capable person. SHortage of staff excuses just a eye wash.

    Gansalves Sir,

"No doubt the prisoners who have escaped will be traced but steps should be taken to ensure that these incidences do take place

    Typo error: do take place.

In my opinion both the under trials who escaped and one who lent a helping hand will be caught.

Such lapses by jail staff should not be tolerated and concerned official to be punished for his negligence.

There was a similar occurrence some months ago in Mangalore. It is unfortunate that because of the shortage of staff under-trials take advantage of the situation to escape.

No doubt the prisoners who have escaped will be traced but steps should be taken to ensure that these incidences do take place
