Kasargod, Jan 28: The work on the Kasargod Government Medical College, which seemed to have been virtually forgotten by all and sundry after foundation for the project was laid in 2013, finally got under way here on Thursday January 28. The medical college will come up at Ukkinadka near Perla.

Kasargod MLA N A Nellikunnu inaugurated the work and said, "There is no need to bring politics into development. The work on this project had halted due to several technical reasons. By next year, the first phase of work will be complete."

Zilla panchayat (ZP) president A G C Basheer presided over the ceremony.

ZP member K Srikanth, Badiadka gram panchayat president K Krishna Bhat, block panchayat member A S Muhammed, Badiadka panchayat president Zaibunnisa, Yenmakaje panchayat member Laxminarayana Pai, Abubakker Siddique, Aithappa Kulal, Y Sharada, Kitco engineer Unni and many others were present.

District collector P S Mohammed Sagir welcomed the gathering while deputy health officer Dr M S Vimal Raj proposed the vote of thanks.

The foundation for the Rs 385-crore project was laid by Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy on November 30, 2013 and college was supposed to be ready by 2017. But for more than two years, the work did not start.

The work is being undertaken by Kitco and the first phase is expected to take 10 months. Out of Rs 385 crore, Rs 288 crore has been sanctioned by the government.

I hope the Kasargod Medical College will be fully commissioned as soon as possible. I am surprised that it took two long years to start this project. Good luck.
