Karkala, Jan 29: The five-day annual feast at the historic St Lawrence pilgrimage centre witnessed innumerable devotees from India and abroad arriving and getting blessed, irrespective of religion, groups, languages and social status.

Begging was banned in the premises of the church on the days of the festival. Those who wanted to donate money to the beggars could put their money in three large boxes kept in the premises for the purpose.

The weak, sick, physically challenged, the old and the ascetics were found waiting in long lines in front of the shrine since the morning on Friday Januart 29 for alms.

A whopping Rs 10,84,000 was collected this year. The amount was divided into three groups - Wholly physically challenged and the old were handed over Rs 1,000 each, partially physically challenged were given Rs 500 each, ordinary beggars were given Rs 300 each, besides packets of ghee rice to all of them.

The distribution of alms started at 12 noon. The volunteers distributing the money kept a keen eye, distributing only food packets to the child beggars. There were also instances of beggars pretending to be blind in a bid to receive more than their share.

The annual festival committee has said that nearly 14 lac devotees arrived at the pilgrim center during the five days of the festival. Out of them 30% were Catholics and others belonging to different religions. The celebrations went on smoothly without any untoward incident.

Begging is banned.. but Administration also totally failed to stop this. How these beggars are reaching in time, disappearing from there quickly after this and appearing in another spot is very surprising.. Actually State Administration should take these beggars to Rehabilitation Centers and if the State acts always in this kind service, beggars may not spot every where.. and the amount collected in this regard may be transferred to state Rehabilitation Centers...

Pls. do not give money to beggars especially children because the racketeers will bring more children in this begging racket instead give directly food and clothing or grocery. otherwise it will mean by doing charity we are indirectly helping antisocial elements who use children in begging. PLS THIS IS A REQUEST TO ALL INDIANS STOP GIVING MONEY TO CHILDREN. THIS IS ONLY WAY TO STOP THIS THRIVING BUSINESS BY ANTOSOCIAL ELEMENTS

I totally agree with you I have seen most beggars who are able bodied and can work they beg and in the evening they go to drink including women and the children most of them are either given birth to beg or kidnapped. This is a big racket. I suggest even temples and mosques and all religious place should stop beggars instead whatever money comes in donation boxes should be used for rehabilitation of children at least provide their basic needs like food clothing shelter education. The funds that come at Tirupati, Shirdi Sai Baba Hazi Ali are uncountable this should be used for welfare of poor , the children and farmers.

Abundance carries with it the responsibility of sharing (Prov 22.8. 8) and “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly. each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. and God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” (2 Cor. 9:6–8)

Fantastic contribution to the poor, physically challenged and down trodden. I am sure many of the devotees irrespective of caste, creed and age were blessed at the Attur Shrine festival during the last five days.
