Rohith was an OBC, parties should not politicise it: Union Minister

New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI): Another Union Minister today claimed that Rohith Vemula, who committed suicide at Hyderabad University, was not a Dalit and parties should stop politicising his death for their own gains.

"There is no question of this being a Dalit versus non-Dalit issue as Rohith and his family are an OBC. They belong to the Vaddera caste. Now it is being said that his mother is a Dalit which is correct," Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot said.

"But Rohith was born in 1990 and as per the facts that have emerged from the investigations, Rohith got his certificate made in July 2014 which states that he is a Dalit. So, the certificate was made after almost 25 years and he was living with his father till then," he said.

"So, the question here is why didn't he get a certificate made before that and why he got a certificate made now?" he alleged.

Earlier, Union ministers Sushma Swaraj and Jual Oram had claimed that Vemula was not a Dalit. Gehlot alleged that Congress and other parties were politicising Rohith's suicide for "their own gains".

"Before Rohith's suicide, nine more students committed suicide on the same campus. Why didn't those become a big issue?

"All these political leaders - Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal and others - who are rushing to Hyderabad after Rohith's suicide, I want to ask them where were they when nine other students from the University committed suicide and those had happened during UPA's rule," he said.

Gehlot charged that Rohith and the organisation he was associated with were involved in "anti-national" activities and had condemned the execution of Yakub Memon who was involved in 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts.

"ABVP (BJP's students wing) objected to their activities, following which 30-40 boys had roughened up Sushil Kumar. Later, five students, including Rohith, were expelled," he said.

"We will ensure they get justice," the minister said. Gehlot said that "a judicial inquiry has been initiated by the government into his death and whoever is found guilty will be punished."

He said that it was sad that efforts were being made to give his suicide a caste angle and disturb country's atmosphere.

Rohith's family members have refused to accept an ex-gratia amount of Rs 8 lakh and the government will ensure that they get justice, he said.

Gehlot today presented the Dr Ambedkar National Merit Awards to the meritorious students of Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe students of Secondary and Senior Secondary School Examinations of year 2015.

Committing suicide at the instigation of other factors is a crime which do not require any caste tag.

    Dear BJpians and RSS

Please don't call Rohit an OBC or SC, but please call him a human being like you and me and he too has blood and feelings and heart like any other human being. Born OBC or SC is not crime (it was the varna system made by Brahmins) but God says ..oh you mankind I have created you in pairs, male and female so that you dwell in trinquility..Verily most close to God is the one who is most God conscious and fearful..." Not SC or Brahmin...A true good human being is loved by God and not by his social or birth status..

Instead of saying not to politicize the matter,
Let the Social Justice and Empowerment Minister take stringent action on perpetrators and then say,
Let this be a deterrent action, Do not ever discriminate or oppress anyone on the basis of caste, gender, religion etc.
This would be a true natural justice delivery by a Minister and not cover up!

Thanks you Mr. Gehlot for letting us to know that the life of an OBC is less than of a dalit.

Actually University administration and Bandaru and Smrithi Irani were harsh with Rohit thinking that he is a Dalit only. If they knew in advance that his father is an OBC and only mother is Dalit, then probably they would have behaved softly with him.
So logically we can consider that the BJP govt harassed Rohit thinking that he is a Dalit. So, it should be construed that the real intention of BJP govt was to harass a Dalit only. So now they cannot escape by telling that Rohit was OBC. The Court always probes the REAL MOTIVE behind any action and NOT just the final result.

Wrong. The reason for strict action was to do with the cause - that is Yaqub Memon.

The same ministers are confirming that Rohit Vemula's mother was a Dalit, and his father has deserted mother and children long ago. It is also true that Dalit mother brought up all her Children and as per earlier Supreme Court verdict one who brings up the Children, either father or mother, the caste of such person applies to Children also. Therefore, when Rohit was brought up by mother, naturally her dalit caste applies to Rohit also as per Supreme court Verdict.

Why these ministers are beating around the bush, we don't know, but for a thief moonlight is an enemy.
Rohith had a certificate as dalit before his death, that is a fact. When he got the certificate is non issue. We apply for caste certificate, passport or nationality certificate according to need and our convenience. Nationality certificate shows that we are born in India, whenever you get the certificate the fact remains same, that is you are born in India. Public are not fools and millions of students are not mad.

It is the dirty minds who want to take cheap mileage on a sad death of a student, rushing to Hyd like vultures.. They call it Dalit death so that they can politicize it and corner central govt. So, it is the duty of the minister to say that the death is condemnable but stop politicizing it.

The same dirty minds are no where to be seen in dozen other student death after hyd incident.. as if they have dedicated their life only to hyd incident..

These retarded minds only want to blame modi, they have no tears for student's family but by taking dalit name they thought they can create country wide unrest..
alas, what a pathetic route they have chosen. hating the govt means they can stoop to any level.

What injustice has been done to Rohit? The University had taken some action and University is not a political establishment. As the Minister stated, judicial enquiry is on to find if expelling him was right.

    Dear Swamy,
Appreciated your concern over the Student.
But Mr. Rohit s death was became highlight because of the media and Congress tried to take credit as projected he was "DALIT"
Either Media or Congress considered him as a Indian or Human.
If their concern was Just as Human Mr. Kejriwal and Mr. Rahul Vincy will visit TN after 3 students Suicide.

No need further explanation to make you understand that Congress and Media projected this issue just for their personnel benefit.
