Mangaluru, Feb 4: A high tension wire broke and fell on the road where the national highways work was in progress at Thokkottu. The incident happened on Wednesday evening, February 3 when a tree was cut and lifted through a crane fell on the electric pole. The presence of mind of the local people averted loss of life and property.

The Thokkottu flyover work and road widening work has been progressing in brisk pace. The electric poles in front of Thokkottu Nethaji hospital were shifted on Wednesday morning and new poles were erected in their places. Meanwhile a huge tree that was being lifted through a crane rolled on the electric pole when the rope tied to the tree broke. The pole too broke and the high tension live cable fell across the road.

Meanwhile a tourist bus that arrived from Kerala drove on the cable causing sparks. Immediately the locals and national highway workers stopped the vehicles from both the sides and prevented casualties. It would have been tragic if the cable had fallen on the bus. If the pedestrians had walked on it, there would have been loss of lives.

The snapped cable blocked traffic for half an hour. Police, people, highway workers and Mescom workers jointly removed the cable and made smooth way for traffic.

God is the savior and helper at all times if you truly believe in him. Many lives were saved as a high tension wire fell on the road. Thank our beloved God for his mercies.

Height of negligence... Action should be taken against contractors . We should not wait for tragedy to happen to take action against culprits. So book them against negligence. Our country police are not good for keeping public interest. Shame!!!

I agree with "height of negligence", but why action against the contractor? Is it because he did not do his job well? Honestly, action to be taken against the MESCOM department for their negligence and for their corrupt mentality. Electrical poles are placed everywhere less than 1 feet below ground. Also there is no close coordination between various departments. Our public servants and government officials forget their role and they try to dictate their own rules, thus people run from pillar to post and do not what to do? Whom to report? I personally experienced this.

@Peter,mangalore,certainly contractor is responsible for the disaster. He should see that while cutting the tree ,that doesnt fall on wires,or not whole heavy partof it fall on wires.Of course Mescom is not without fault. But contractor could make Arrangements before cutting ,to shut off Connection for the time being at that area.Everything is a matter of plan ,thinking. Not just cut and do as if dont bother anything else.He should thank God for not any poor mans life was not a offer.
