Udupi, Feb 10: A youth has been arrested for allegedly raping his minor sister, five months after the crime came to light.
The accused, Sridhar (22) was arrested by the Malpe police on Tuesday February 9.
His sister, a 14-year-old student from Nejar near Santhekatte here, was raped between June and August last year, and the incident came to light in September only after the girl became pregnant. The foetus was then aborted, sources said.
The girl hails from a poor Dalit family. Her parents are coolie workers.
The victim had not revealed the name of the accused and was acting strange when questioned, sources said. The Malpe police who began investigations took several persons into custody for questioning, but it led nowhere.
The police then subjected the girl as well as five suspects, which included her brother, to DNA tests. The results of the test confirmed the involvement of Sridhar sources said.
Sridhar was then taken into custody, and during interrogation, he reportedly admitted that he had been raping his sister since June last year.
Sridhar was arrested and produced in court, which remanded him in judicial custody till February 27. He has been booked under POCSO Act.
