Jammers to check cheating in exams

New Delhi, Feb 11 (DHNS): Low-powered jammers to block data connectivity can now be installed at examination centres to prevent students from using radio devices in cheating.

The Centre has granted permission to all statutory bodies which conduct examinations to use them in “sensitive centres”.

The Cabinet Secretariat, which released the policy on Wednesday, made it clear that organisers, however, can deploy the device only at “sensitive centres”.

The announcement comes months after many students were caught cheating in the All India Pre-Medical and Pre-Dental Test using sophisticated bluetooth devices. The test had to be re-conducted by the CBSE after a Supreme Court order.

For installation of the jammers, the examination bodies will have to seek prior approval of the Cabinet Secretariat.

“Only those jammers which have been produced by the approved vendors can be installed,” the secretariat said. Bharat Electronics of Bengaluru and Electronic Corporation of India of Hyderabad, have been approved for supplying the jammers.

Exam centres can be marked as “sensitive” for the purpose of deployment of jammers either on the basis of past experiences or any “other inputs,” the notification said.

I am pleased to note that it is becoming a common practice not only to install CCTV's in all public sector / private establishments but also installing jammers to curb the utter nuisance of cellphones which is being misused to a very large extent. In our days, we were taught to use mobile very sparingly AND ONLY in emergency that too if the telephone was not available / if the concerned person was away from the house / establishment. But now, it has become a fashion for everybody to possess a mobile .. no matter what .. to show their status quo . There are schools who have come up with certain norms and procedures and made it mandatory to ask their teaching staff to deposit their cellphones in the principal's office / administrator's office prior to start of school hours so as to devote their quality time on caring, upkeep and observing the ward's performance which is note worthy. There are still some schools who do not allow their wards (children) to carry cellphones in schools and are thoroughly frisked and shunned away if they enter the school premises. Any important messages / calls received will be informed to the staff concerned.

Moving away from this topic, I wish that jammers should not only be installed at the so-called sensitive centres but at all schools and colleges across the country. The school and college management should allocate a budget for this infrastructure so as to avoid any more misuse of technology by today's youth which is becoming a major headache., especially for usage of social media platforms and viewing of pornography contents Granted the fact that this has just started, I am of the opinion that this should have commenced several years ago.

Technology has both its advantage and disadvantages. People savvy with technology should not misuse / take technology for granted so that this can be used in the right manner and spread a message across to everyone concerned. The earlier this starts the better it would be beneficial for one and all
