Concern over religious freedom, US lawmakers write to Modi

Washington, Feb 27 (PTI): Expressing serious concern over violence against religious minorities in India, 34 top American lawmakers have asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take immediate steps to protect their fundamental rights and bring the perpetrators to justice.

"We urge your government to take immediate steps to ensure that the fundamental rights of religious minorities are protected and that the perpetrators of violence are held to account," the lawmakers, including eight Senators, said in a letter to the Prime Minister.

"Of particular concern is the treatment of India's Christian, Muslim and Sikh communities," said the letter dated February 25, which was released to the press today by the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission.

Among others the letter was signed by Senators Roy Blunt, Amy Klobuchar, James Lankford, Al Franken, Tim Scot, Ben Sasse, John Boozman and Steve Daines.

The letter was signed by 24 members from the US House of Representatives including Joseph Pits, Keith Ellison, Brad Wenstrup, Jim Costa, Trent Franks, Ted Poe and Mark Walker.

"We also urge you to take steps to control the activities of groups, such as the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and instruct Indian security forces to enforce the rule of law and protect religious minority communities from religiously- motivated harassment and violence," the lawmakers said.

"On June 17th, 2014, more than 50 village councils in the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh adopted a resolution banning all 'non-Hindu religious propaganda, prayers, and speeches' in their communities," the letter said, adding that the Christian minority community has been dramatically affected.

"The ban effectively has criminalised the practice of Christianity for an estimated 300 Christian families in the region one day after a mob, which included members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, seriously injured six Christians in the village of Sirciguda.

"Since the ban was implemented, Christians in the Bastar District reportedly have been subjected to physical assaults, denial of government services, extortion, threats of forced expulsion, denial of access to food and water, and pressure to convert to Hinduism," they alleged.

Expressing concern over beef ban in India, the lawmakers said this is increasing tensions and encouraging vigilante violence against the Muslim community.

They also raised additional concerns about the lack of recognition of Sikhism as a distinct religion, which prevents members of the community from accessing social services and employment and educational preferences available to other religious communities.

Congressmen and Senators applauded Prime Minister Modi about his statement on religious freedom and communal harmony, including his promise in February 2014 that his government would "ensure that there is complete freedom of faith and not allow any religious group, belonging to the majority or the minority, to incite hatred against others."

"We urge you to turn these words into action by publicly condemning the ban on non-Hindu faiths in the Bastar District of Chhattisgarh, and the violent assaults and other forms of harassment against religious minorities throughout India," the letter said.

Of what use is a country that believes in divisive agenda and violence in the name of religion and food habits? What country are you talking about when its govt backs violence and comes after you merely because you have a different opinion?

If all countries have to mind their own business and others don't have any right to talk, may be Pakistan can tell the same thing for us, keep your border safe and stop the terrorists because you have border security forces or paramilitary forces. We are superior to Pakistan as you know, then why we could not go and get that part of the Kashmir from Pakistan, who stops you? If you don't care the international community, then just get all Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh by force. Don't just keep telling, India can solve the problem and we are trying to sort it out since independence. If India can solve everything, why Namo is hopping from country to country with a begging bowl?? You need a cool head to understand what we need to get respect from international community??

Dear friend, simply watch the inflow of foreign funds to transform India as the next paradise on earth, the foreign visit's fruits are the FDI in India.

You are living in Dubai, I love to visit UAE, had been there a few times, especially Dubai where people from 200 nations of the world are living in peace and harmony they all belong to different religions and even though UAE is an Islamic country, the great leaders of that great nation were visionaries and educated, they put religion behind economic growth. I was reading about the Logos ship of the Operation Mobilization, when it was visiting Dubai in 1972, that was the only ship at the harbor. How the people, both the Christian expatriates and the natives of UAE gave such a cordial welcome towards the ship of a Christian Ministry so I could very easily evaluate the greatness of the rulers of UAE.
Also, the Christmas celebrations of UAE will be the no 1 in the world, but the BJP tried to take that day from the Indian calendar through the powerful hand of Ms. Irani. Well, wait and watch the show yet to happen! Also I read about the generosity of the ruler of Sharjah in donating money for the rebuilding of some dilapidated monasteries in Armenia when His excellency paid a visit to that country. GOD's special blessings be upon UAE.

Now UAE is emerging very strongly in foreign investment like Singapore. It takes wealth to create wealth when religion get into the economy, that economy will be seriously affected. What happened to the BJP Government through their religious game card was a big shock and lesson now.

When we got freedom from British our leaders wanted to rule India as republic country but Jinnah wanted a separate country for Muslims. So it was decided Pakistan was created as Muslim country and India for other religion. Even Pakistan declared that whoever other religion people can stay in Muslim country, and Indian was not declared as Hindu country and now only BJP or RSS is telling it is Hindustan.

When Mr. Modi took control of Gujarat, in a place called Dang in Gujarat where a lot of Dalits were converted to the Christian faith, they were severely persecuted. The Bishop of the Evangelical Church of Tamil Nadu, Bishop Isiah Sargunam went to Gujarat because his Church had many believers in that area. He is a close friend of the DMK leader Sri. Karunanithi and he sent a message to Mr. Modi so solve the attacks against the Christians, but he ignored.

Two CMs, both of Nagaland and Mizoram wrote letters to Mr. Modi showing their concern about the attacks on the Christians in India when the BJP came into power, he didn't respond. For him, minority persecutions is nothing but the earthquake gave some warning, and when he left the job after three tenure, Gujarat was at the bottom level, but in 2008 Karnataka took the top ranking in the Christian persecution.

So, probably this letter from the U.S. Senators and Congressmen may give him some warning sign, let us hope and pray.

When we go in flight during safety instructions they usually say first wear your oxygen mask before helping others. I urge these US lawmakers to protect Blacks/Muslims/Hispanics in their country first and then lecture others. Anybody google "US police shooting by race" will see the reality how white police shoot unarmed black people in USA. Also google "death penalty in US by race" and see how all white juries award death penalty to young black men in court cases and we all know how muslims/Asians are treated in US Airports. We also know what The potential next US President Mr Trump has told about Muslims. Let them tell Mr Trump not to talk nonsense about muslims. The USA should not poke their nose in others business. Even in the past their court has given summons to Sonia Gandhi for Delhi 1984 riots etc. These kind of behaviour is unacceptable where they try to interefere in business of an independant nation.

This should be the official response from PM to US. Will he risk another Visa ban?

Dear Mr Geoffrey, visa ban is all eye wash. At the end of the day it is money. India is fastest growing economy and US and all western countries want to get their share. If these people wer genuinly angry with Mr Modi why did they reverse the Visa ban? Hypocricy.

JayaPrakash Shetty, Mangalore/UK yes you are right India is a fastest growing country this is why you and me are outside our own country and helping build other country, maybe because as you said India is a fastest growing country. JayaPrakash Shetty the truth is India was growing but now no more.

Mr. Shetty, since you are living in UK, you should have known that the premier of every country in the world has diplomatic visa to visit USA. It is not reversal of ban on Modi's visa, but a visa of different category. You may recall the worst enemies of USA had visited here with diplomatic visa in the past. Yugo Chavez,Mohammar Gaddafi, Mohamoud Ahmadinejad.. to name a few.

The dislikes are for your "Frog in the well" mentality and not because the British ruled India. Before the British, Aryans came to India and they are still ruling.

JayBrakasah, Despite living in UK, it seems still you are frog in the well ?? Are Hindus are mal-treated in USA or UK? We are talking about the fundamental rights in India and not isolated cases in USA.

Dear Mr Prakash, when discussing in social forums some basic decency is needed. I am not frog in the well, probably you are. Ask the blacks and civil rights leaders in USA what they think of fundamental rights of blacks. I doubt you even live in USA.

I do appreciate the US concern for Indian Christians / minorities and wish they show similar concern to Christians and other minorities in Pakistan, Syria and Iraq as well. Only in some parts of this vast country Christians and other minorities are being discriminated against whereas in other countries they practically suffer the worst form of persecution. Even today there is persecution of Christians in communist countries. Why this double standard on the part of US?

Well said John Tauro. U.S show always double standard diplomacy. On one side they supply arms and on the other they talk about peace.

    @ Dr.Shankernarayana.
Sir, in the US anyone can buy arms including AK-47, Oozie or automatic rifles. Owning arms is a constitutional right. The arms manufactures or dealers will sell arms to anyone in the world. It is their business. The Govt.controls selling of arms that are highly sophisticated. Selling arms is intended to defend and not for misuse. If you want AK-47, you can buy in USA to defend yourself. But, if you go around and shoot everyone which was not the original intention of selling arms. The only alternative is to do peace or stop selling arms to such people. There is no double standard.

Karnataka Govt. sell booze and put pressure on Excise Dept. to sell more and more booze. At the same time, pay for rehabilitating alcoholics. The liquor barons build hospitals where they treat alcoholics. Being a doctor, don't you think this is also a double standard in your opinion.

What makes you to think that US has not voiced concerned about the religious persecution of Christians in Pakistan, Syria,Iran and other parts of the world? Because it was not published in Daijiworld.com, it doesn't mean that US is not concerned about religious persecution in other countries. You need to read more.
