Pope Francis sets up health clinics for homeless

Rome, Mar 1 (IANS/AKI): Pope Francis has set up health clinics for the homeless around St Peter's Square in Vatican City.

"We are equipped to assist everyone who comes to us. This is Pope Francis' wish," papal almoner Konrad Krajewski said.

The mobile clinics will be staffed by doctors from the Vatican, the University of Rome and from other Italian medical charities, the Osservatorio Romano daily said.

The doctors will be able to give the homeless medical check-ups, prescribe treatment and refer them to hospitals if necessary, the paper said.

At Pope Francis' behest, the Vatican already offers free showers and a barber for the homeless and a new shelter opened last year.
