Udupi, Mar 24: A mentally unsound man was tied to a pole and thrashed allegedly by the owner of a bar who thought him to be a thief. This inhuman incident occurred on Tuesday March 22 night near a bar at the city bus stand here.
The man in question, aged around 30, was working for a hotel near Chittaranjan Circle since the last nearly three months. He suddenly started to behave like having lost control over his mental faculties. Thereafter, he was dismissed from service.
As he created problems for people and shops in the town wherever he went, the locals had handed him over to police. The police had released him after confirming that he was suffering from psychological disorder.
It is said that on Tuesday night, the man tried to break the lock of the bar near the city bus stand, after which the bar owner allegedly tied him up to a pole, as he construed him to be a thief. It is said that the man was also beaten up. The police, it is gathered, took him into custody and later released him. However, when contacted, police personnel of the town station here claimed that they were 'unaware' of any such incident.
Some eyewitnesses said that a few who observed the man's plight and erratic behaviour have contacted 'Vishwasada Mane' at Shankarpura where several such people are rehabilitated.
