Mangalore, Oct 1:
Senior citizens assembled at the Nehru Maidan to submit a memorandum in a Jatha organized by the Help Age India (an NGO) to the state government through the assistant commissioner, here on Monday October 1.

The memorandum stated economic, emotional and social problems of the senior citizens, like difficulties to make both ends meet, pangs of loneliness, frustration owing to lack of understanding, illness during old age and other problems relating to infrastructure, which they requested should be taken care of.

The NGO requested in the memorandum for an independent department to be set up to look after the rights of senior citizens similar to that of the children and women. Further they urged the government representatives to visit the house of senior citizens, and solve their problems through counselling if found among the members of families.

The Memorandum further states that medical aids at all government hospitals and free medicine should be provided to all senior citizens besides quality health services. Seats should be reserved in all public transportation services especially buses and bus pass facilities should be extended  to all the elderly citizens, the NGO added in the memorandum.

Artificial organs should be made available. And if necessary, the rights of the senior citizens should be implemented and made effective, requested the Help Age India authority in its memorandum.

Mr.Gilbert, best wishes to you. You have made 93 years with best of health. May God bless you and make 100 with good health.I am 30 years younger to you. Thank God that you are not marching on Mangalore roads along with Help Age.

Coming to the point,I am sure that you have congratulated older folks for their courage in taking part in the "JATHA". For many it was a "Torture March". Those feeble old folks walked a mile on a run down road to eternity. I have been to Biloxi,Jackson and some other towns in Mississipi, one of the poorer State of USA. Also I have been to Alabama, another poorer state.

But, the worst roads of these states, are the best road of Mangalore City. I do not know how long ago you have been to Mangalore, come down and take a drive here. Older folks have to suffer everyday walking these streets of Mangalore. I could not tell you whether these Seniors really took courage to march or they were forced to do so by the Social workers from Help Age and Nuns from the Homes for the aged.

I did not see any Ambulance in the vicinity of these marchers. Since you being from USA,will this happen in USA. Will the Nursing Homes of Mississippi allow the old residents to march a mile holding banners in between lawless traffic, which you see in Mangalore. I just wonder if the Children of these poor souls allow this to happen to their kins.

In USA this could have been considered as ABUSE and charges could have been filed by States Attorney. Head of a Old Age home in Mangalore, bluntly said "NO" to Help Age officials for their request and refused to send their residents to march. She told me that it was just cruel to march these feeble people for publicity purpose. Good Job Rev.Sister for standing head high. Mr.Gilbert, march towards Century. God Bless you.

Great Job? Help Age India. How wise it was to march these older, unhealthy, weaker Citizens, from Nehru Maidan to DC's Office just to submit a memorandum. All of You and Us know how miserable are the roads. How many of them were taken to maidan by manipulating them with some excuses,by Social workers and Ashram Heads.

I am sure many of them were caught of guard, when they were told to march on main road in between the traffic near State Bank area. Look at the pity of these people. Some have bent back. Have a close look at their feet(one with filaria and buckled toes) and analyse their suffering. How many had cramps in their legs.

We the public should fit in their shoes to know the pain and suffering. How much panic they must have felt when they saw that traffic rush with speeding vehicles. How many of them went breathless by the time they met DC. How many of them went to bed last night with pains and aches all over their body.

This shows how people use other people for propaganda and headlines. I had very high opinion of Help Age all this time. But,this incident really threw me off balance. I am sure Mr.Rao would have come to Maidan to accept the petition if He was aware of the apathy of these Seniors.

If my parents were used,to carry banners and walk that distance without my knowledge,I certainly would have met a Attorney.
