Udupi, Oct 4: A leopard, which paid a visit in search of food to Innanje environs in the company of its cubs on Monday, has created a scare in the minds and hearts of residents.

When the leap of leopard and cubs was first spotted at the house of Sudhakar Shetty in Madumbali, the forest officials were immediately alerted. The set up a large cage, using dogs as ruses to attract the leopards. Yet, after a wait of two days and changing the location of the cage to two different places, the leopards have not paid a repeat visit.

The dogs and puppies in the cage, without being aware that they could be devoured anytime by the jungle cats, seemed to be suffering in hunger and boredom.

Residents say that with the din and clamour created by the leopard-catching operation, the leap might have shifted base to a safer habitat in another part of the forest.

A leopard had been caught in Pangala-Innanje last year, when it had fallen into a well in its pursuit of a hen. After the forest officials caught it with the help of the public, it was released in the forest thereafter.
