Mangaluru: Silence over Baliga's murder questioned, fingers pointed at temple

Mangaluru, Mar 30: More than a week after the brutal murder of RTI activist Vinayak Baliga at PVS Kala Kunj Road in Kodialbail, Rationalists' Association along with DYFI, Dalit Sangharsha Samiti, SFI and Baliga's parents on Wednesday March 30 questioned the silence of the GSB community to which Baliga belonged and of society at large, and also pointed fingers at a temple and a school against which Baliga had filed cases.

Addressing a press meet here, Prof Narendra Nayak, president of Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations, who has been vocal on the issue, said, "We condemn the brutal murder of RTI activist Vinayak Baliga. This is an indirect signal to all RTI activists that they should be 'careful and not interfere in corrupt people's affairs'. Vinayak Baliga was a GSB and devotee of Lord Venkataramana Temple, but not a single GSB organization or individual has spoken for him or condemned his murder.

"Baliga had pointed out irregularities in the temple functioning and challenged it in the high court. He had also questioned the school managed by VHP leader M B Puranik that had created parking and traffic problems in the area. Baliga had exposed many issues related to builders and the real estate industry.

"Baliga in his case had demanded re-audit of Shree Venkataramana Temple. The high court had referred the case to the sessions court. During the hearing, Baliga had said that he had threat to life from the opponent. He had appealed to the court to appoint an auditor to look into the accounts of the temple from 2007 to 2015 as there were irregularities," Prof Nayak said.

"The temple'e earlier accountant's licence was cancelled by the court. Now some influential and prominent persons have gone missing," he said, making a veiled reference to a Yuva Brigade leader who is alleged to be 'absconding', and whose house the police had visited.

"A section of the media has speculated that Baliga was involved in blackmail. I challenged this claim. If someone has proof, then show it. Even the police department has said he was not involved in any such thing. Go to his house and see the condition of his parents and two unmarried sisters," he said.

"Baliga belonged to Konkani-speaking community but no Konkani speaking person or organization has condemned the murder. He was a Hindu devotee," he added.

Criticizing the silence of public at large, he said, "I strongly condemn the silence of the GSB community and of the society. No one has come forward to speak up. This is a murder of humanity. All those who indulge in immoral rowdyism and attack couples of different faiths have spent crores of rupees on renovating places of worship and thousands who do it are sleeping now. The so-called minorities who cry foul when their places of worship are attacked or their religious sentiments are hurt have not uttered a single whimper on this murder of a fellow human being."

"Baliga was murdered by professional killers and we want to know who hired them and why. This struggle for justice will be taken to Bengaluru and if necessary to Delhi," he asserted.

Ganesh Baliga, who had supported Vinayak in his RTI activism, said, "This murder has put RTI activists in a quandary over how to proceed in future. Vinayak Baliga spent money from his own pocket to file RTIs. He did not do this for personal gain but to bring transperancy in the Shree Venkataramana temple administration. The temple was functioning as per the norms set in 1927, and Baliga had filed a case in 2014 in the court stating that the income of the temple had increased manifold and he found misappropriation approximately worth Rs 8 crore during the period of 2007-2015. There is no proper documentation either. He demanded re-auditing as gold and silver were coming into the temple. The court appointed a new auditor. The next hearing in this case is scheduled for April 2.

"Baliga had filed the case against the temple in order to bring transparency in its administration. I personnally suspect that someone from our own community (GSB) is involved in this. He had told me that he was facing threat to life and had stopped going out after 8 pm," he added.

At this point, Vinayak Baliga's father Ramachandra said, "My son would not go out after 8 pm. He would sit at the dinner table and ask if the gate was locked."

Baliga's mother Jayanti with tears in her eyes said, "I have lost my son. In my entire life I have never cursed anyone, but today I am cursing his murderers. I have a small family and today we have become destitutes. He was the only brother for his sisters who are at home."

DYFI president Muneer Katipalla said, "Powerful lobbies are said to be involved in this case, hence a special investigation team under an IPS officer should be appointed. He exposed many issues of builders, real estate industry, educational institutions, religious leaders and banking lobbies. Minister U T Khader who visited his house should bring this issue to the attention of the chief minister and the CM should appoint a special officer to investigate the case. We have faith in the police commissioner, still we want a special team to probe the case."

Meanwhile, reliable sources said that a senior chartered accountant's car was used by the murderers, who had come in a bike, to get away after committing the crime. This probably explains why the CCTV images failed to capture images of the bike leaving the spot.

quite touching incident. It's a murder of democracy, humanity ... everything. shows how strong the evil power has rooted in our society. if anybody comes on their way, they will be eliminated like this. whether it's a RTI activist, public servants, authorities ... could be anybody. all the powerful people who are supposed to and who can do something to stop these, all have become a part of this whole corrupt system and hence a common man is left looking at silently, very helpless. but now it looks very scary, anybody can come and kill anyone while their routine life. No safety, no protection, nothing... OMG. what a society we are living in...

Culprit should be punished whether it is Salman Khan or Jyoyhi Busu's followers. During 1970s there were on average6 to 7 murders in west Bengal under all powerful Busu's nose. To some extent culture of murder continued under CPM both in Kerala as well as Bengal. It is great solace Mr. Nayak is making every effort to bring culprit to Justice. Of course there should not be ive political vendetta and I earnestly hope Nayak's ideological friends will do similar activist work to book CPM's and Muslim League workers involved in various murders regularly Happening in Kerala.

I condemn this crime and one cannot take justice in his hands and punish anybody for his acts. It is the job of the Court. I think all the RTI cases involving Baliga should be checked and how many cases filed and how many cases settled out of court etc should be verified. If this is done, then you will come to know the people behind the tragedy.

1.Very Very sad state of affairs.

    2. Very very evident that 'Big Hands' are involved.

    3. The Supari killers might have 'named' their masters by now.

    4. Up to the police to bring the 'big culprits' to book.

    5. Who is the veteran 'C.A.'?
    Yuva Brigade we all know.

6.If even a few facts mentioned here in the press meet are true, then the investigations , if handled properly would throw up 'explosive' facts.
    7. Crime never pays in any case.
Hope that the 'real culprits' behind this heinous crime are nailed.

    8. Feel for the members , near and dear ones of Mr. Baliga.

    9. Feel for our beloved Mangaluru

"Criticizing the silence of public at large, Prof said, "I strongly condemn the silence of the GSB community and of the society. No one has come forward to speak up- Narendra Nayak".

Dear Sir "we do not have a platform to protest. The existing platforms have their own limited aims. We do not have a citizens forum. By and large we think it is others job to fight for us. We are too busy attending functions , praying for blessings. We do not want to be the Lord's instruments of justice, good samaritans.

Just like the global bad guys create frictions in civic societies via terror, here in DK Puranik et al are successful in creating division among citizens so that they can benefit from the inactive civic society. The situation Mangalore is clearly not Ok. To give an example: small frivolous issue of pedestrians telling the 2 wheelers put on your headlight( evening time) gets a very threatening reaction from the rider " I am warning you- who do you think you are? This is Kudla. be care full in the future".

There are 4 wheelers who get angry when told to switch off their high beams in the night. TELL ME SIR- WHEN WE ARE SO UNCARING FOR OUR FELLOW CITIZENS- GET ANGRY- HOW DARE THEY TELL ME TO SWITCH OFF MY HIGH BEAM- ATTITUDE? DO YOU THINK SIR THE PUBLIC CARES?

There is rapid growth in the city and those who have money and power ( hook or crook) have arm twisted the system. Public at large seem to follow the principle of " richer one is more respected is that person" Even devil can quote scriptures in Mangalore.

Prof Nayak "The so-called minorities who cry foul when their places of worship are attacked or their religious sentiments are hurt have not uttered a single whimper on this murder of a fellow human being."

I fully agree with you sir. During the holy week we had sermons on bad deeds of ISIS yet not a single mention of martyrdom of RTI activist Baliga from the pulpit. To me irrespective of religion - any one doing selfless work - is doing Christ's work.

There is division enough against christians in Mangalore. Had a word been mentioned about Baliga murder, Holy Week would have been Hell week.

The lathi danda elements, from their barracks 'toot padthe the'. We have to use our common sense in relation to the surrounding environments, when we speak public and at gatherings.

There are some motor mouths who speak rubbish, but they also have god fathers. We have none, so we quietly pray for Baliga and if there is any mass rally, participate in large numbers.

Truth and Justice must prevail, but the rallies should be organized by those who are immediate to Baliga - his family, his community, his neighborhood, his friends etc. We can only join in.

All those who condemn this dastardly act of gruesome murder of the RTI activist should come together and hold out a peace march for the justice to his elderly parents and immediate family. The murder is a threat to the otherwise peace-loving citizens of Mangaluru. The persons involved in the murder , however big or well placed they might be ,should be brought to book and the law should take its own course. This depends , however , on how well the police investigating team prepares their case and present in the court of law. There should not be any escape route ( Under the law ) for the perpetrators of this gruesome murder to go scot free.

RTI activist or not, a citizen is murdered, and justice has to be done.
When have Mangaloreans spoken out, taken a stand? Other than gathering for temple festivals, samajotsava, when have we all stood together for truth and justice?

As long as, SOMEONE ELSE is hurt, we are peaceful in our homes.
And wicked elements know this very well, that is why they dared to touch an RTI activist, so close to the temple and so religious. Because none of us dare and care?

Nobody has the right to take away life. Nobody has blamed the particular community. The blame is on those people lining own pockets in guise of community service and disappear when the help is actually needed.
