Mumbai, Oct 5: Archbishop Telesphore Cardinal P Toppo of Ranchi and president of Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) has nominated Albert W D’Souza, the renowned entrepreneur and educationist based in the city, as the member of the Catholic Council of India (CCI).
Cardinal Toppo in his letter dated September 19, 2007 has nominated Albert to the general body of the CCI for a period of 4 years with effect from September 25, 2007. Albert is one among the 20 distinguished persons from India who have been nominated by the Cardinal.
CCI is the august body of the Catholics in India representing the clergy, the laity and works under the CBCI. Representatives of bishops, religious and laity become part of this body apart from eminent personalities nominated by the CBCI president.
Albert was born at Pangala in Udupi district on January 1, 1957 and after his schooling at Shankerpura and Innanje came here for pursuing education in printing line. He established Printania in a small way about 26 years ago and now this is grown up to be a giant organization in the printing industry.
Printania is a familiar name among multi-national companies, pharmaceuticals, automobile, banking and insurance companies, dioceses and religious congregations and others for their printing needs.
This organization has the distinction of printing the Holy Bible in English and several Indian languages including Konkani. Printania has the credit of printing the Holy Bible for the diocese of Mangalore.
Considering Albert’s contributions to the church and to the society, the then Holy Father Pope John Paul II invited him to Vatican and accorded special audience in 2004. He was the youngest participant in the ‘World Entrepreneurs Meet’ held in Rome in the same year.
Albert is instrumental in starting 5 Engineering and 3 Management colleges in Mumbai and Mangalore under the Catholic Managements. Now by serving in their managing committees he is guiding these institutions.
Albert is the chairman of the Model Co-operative Bank having 13,500 members, 9 branches and Rs180 crore deposits.
