Mangaluru, Apr 9: The kidney donated by Babu, a resident of Payannur, Kerala after he was declared brain dead in Mangaluru, was successfully transplanted to a patient in Yenepoya Hospital, who was on dialysis due to chronic kidney disease, making it the first interstate cadaveric kidney transplant between Kerala and Karnataka.
A team of doctors consisting of urologists, Dr Mujeeburahiman, Dr Nischith D'Souza and Dr Althaf Khan, chief nephrologist Dr Santosh Pai and anesthetists Dr Padmanabha Bhat and Dr Ramamurthy conducted the transplant around 12.30 am on Wednesday April 6. The recipient was on the cadaveric transplant waiting list of Zonal Co-ordination Committee of Karnataka (ZCCK).
When contacted, Y Farhaad, director, finance and research, said that Yenepoya Hospital has got an active cadaveric kidney transplant programme and this was the second such transplant in two weeks. Patients with kidney failure who are unable to get an adequately matched donor should get registered with ZCCK at Yenepoya Hospital to be eligible for cadaveric kidney transplantation.
Babu K V, a 34-year-old construction worker from Vadasery village near Payyanur, Kannur district, Kerala had a fall from the first floor while working at a construction site near Cheemeni, Payyanur. was rushed to Pariyaram Medical College Hospital and after first aid was shifted to AJ Hospital. He was admitted to AJ Hospital on April 2 evening and was declared brain dead on April 4 midnight, after which his organs were harvested.
