Udupi, Apr 11: A gymnastic trainer, Nivedan Gunakar Shetty (40), died after he was electrocuted during travel atop the roof of a local train on the night of Friday April 8. The incident occurred at Dombivli station, Mumbai.
Padubidri Alangaruguthu Nivadan Gunakar Shetty was a resident of Gulzar Apartment at Jagruti Nagar in suburban Kurla. Shetty, second son of the late Gunakar Shetty from Nanayyara Garadi House in Pangala, was unmarried. He was a gifted gymnast, and was working as a professional trainer at Singapore.
Shetty was on a visit to the country on a two-week holiday, and had arrived in Mumbai four days back. He had climbed up a train to return to Dadar after delivering a parcel to a friend ad Dombivli, when tragedy struck. His elder brother, Nishchal Shetty had lost his life in a road accident near Kaup during December 2015, and his family was yet to come to terms with this tragedy, when it was hit by another one. Nivedan could not attend the funeral of Nishchal as he could not get leave.
About six lac people had gathered at Shivaji Park for the 'Gudi Padwa' celebration on Friday organized by Raj Thackeray. As such, there was unprecedented rush in the local trains, and Nivedan, who found it impossible to enter the compartment of the train because of his unusual height (6'3"), decided to travel atop the compartment.
People saw Shetty turning into a fireball after coming in contact with 24,000 volts overhead power cable at Dombivli station. Railway protection police of Dombvli immediately disconnected power supply and brought Shetty down from the roof. Although he was rushed to nearby hospital at Shastri Nagar in Dombivli, the doctors there declared him brought dead, policemen said.
Nivedan had completed his BCom degree through Vijaya College Mulky. He had attractive bodily features since a young age. In between doing hotel business at Mumbai and Belagavi, he kept his desire to be a part of silver screen alive. He was seen in along with Vinod Raj in 'Kannadada Kanda' movie. Because of his affectionate and gentle behaviour, he had been a family friend of Vinod Raj, Leelavathi, Shivraj Kumar, Pueet Rajkumar etc. He was close to Muttappa Rai and was involved with Jaya Karnataka organization promoted by Rai.
Nivedan came to Mumbai to make it his home and try to enter Bollywood. A well-wisher, who is a gymnast, had sent him to Singapore on two-year contract as gymnasium trainer six months back.
Railway police have registered a case. Investigation is on.
