Mangalore, Oct 11: Rumours of oil slick from sunken Eritrean ship DenDen by Tannirbavi shores have been denied by port authorities and marine experts from city-based Fisheries College on Thursday October 11.

Speaking exclusively to daijiworld.com, Capt Vaswani, deputy conservator of NMPT, denied any reports of oil slick from the ill-fated sunken ship M V DenDen. However, port authorities have deployed a team of oil slick experts consisting of 17 members, along with necessary equipment, to face any possible oil slick from its cargo hold.

Moreover, the ship is loaded with furnace oil which would not cause massive oil slick and the heap of substance can be contained faster than the oil slick caused by oil tankers, he informed.

The marine experts from the premier Fisheries College, in the city who visited the spot on Thursday October 11, confirmed that there was no trace of oil slick.  The deputy director of Fisheries College, Suresh, while speaking to daijiworld.com, stated that the local fishermen living along the sea shore, close to the sunken ship, M V DenDen, are unnecessarily apprehensive over the possible oil slick.  However, the test on sample of water, revealed no trace of oil slick, he confirmed.

It is the genuine concern of the local fishermen since the sunken ship DenDen, lies close to the shore.  In an event oil slick, they fear of losing their livelihood.  The statistics on fisheries quantum has revealed that there has been steep decline in fisheries' catch over the years.  Hence they have demanded the authorities to undertake salvage operations at the earliest.

As a retired seafarer I have read this article with concern. To be told that furnace oil in the tanks of the ship that has sunk will evaporate as it is not a petroleum product is a lot of rubbish. Furnace oil is thick and viscous oil that has to be heated for it to be injected into the diesel engine- how it can evaporate beats me. Having being a tanker man myself all I can say is that furnace oil has long term effects on marine life and the shore line than lighter oils like gas oil because it stays subsurface most of the time due to its viscosity.
