Puttur, Apr 15: In an incident which has come to light at Byraguri in Sarve village in the taluk, a man who suspected the character of his wife, hacked her to death on the night of Tuesday April 12.
It is said that Vijay from Byraguri, who killed his wife, Bhagirathi (31) with a sickle, was heavily intoxicated at the time. The couple had a fight before the woman was killed, it is gathered.,
Vijay and Bhagirathi couple lived in the colony at Byraguri. Vijay has three children. Both the wife and husband were addicted to liquor and fought often during night. The quarrel which started between them on Tuesday night went out of control, after which Vijay, it is learnt, raised a sickle and brought it down on the neck of his wife in a fit of rage. Bhagirathi, who suffered grievous injuries, died. After murdering his wife, Vijay slept at home the entire night.
Vijay did not reveal to anyone about the fact that his wife had been murdered. After two days, his neighbours noticed that foul smell emanated from his house. He then sought hoe and pickaxe from them. When questioned about the purpose of these implements, he told what had happened. In the meantime, it was found that Vijay had tried to bury the body of his wife by moving the stone slab covering the toilet aside, but found it impossible as it was too heavy. He then also dug a pit near the house for burying the body.
It is gathered that the three children of the couple were living with Bhagirathi's elder sister at Sanjaynagar in the town here since some days, and therefore, were unaware of the developments which unfolded at their home at Byraguri.
Vijay stands arrested. Assistant superintendent of police, Rishvanth, police circle inspector, Anil S Kulkarni, and others visited the spot and guided investigations. A case of murder stands registered in Sampya police station.
