Mangaluru, Apr 16: The three-day beach mat pro Kabaddi tournament - 2016 organized under the leadership of working president of Karnataka State Amateur Kabaddi Association, Rakesh Malli, went under way at the inaugural that was held on Friday April 15 at Panambur beach near here.
The beach mat pro Kabaddi tournament, which has been organized in association with Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India, Dakshina Kannada district Amateur Kabaddi Association here and Dakshina Kannada district Jayakarnataka organization, was inaugurated by Karnataka state minister for fisheries, K Abhay Chandra Jain, who also presided over the inaugural.
Former union minister, Oscar Fernandes, MLC, Ivan D'Souza, MLAs, Sunil Kumar, Mohiyuddin Bava, Dikki Devu Shetty, city mayor, K Harinath and Dr M Mohan Alva Moodbidri participated as guests in the inaugural function. Former president of Bantwal municipality, Sadanand Malli, and Swarnalata Malli gave symbolic beginning to the tournament.
A number of teams from various places within the country are taking part in this tournament. Winners of the event will get prize money of two lac rupees, runners up will get Rs 1.25 lac, while third and fourth-placed teams will take home Rs 25,000 each. Attractive trophy is also being presented to the winning teams.
Central Railway Mumbai, Dena Bank Mumbai, Maharashtra Police Mumbai, Sai Securities Mumbai, ONGC - New Delhi, Bharath Printers Chennai, I-Tech Chennai, Central Railway Headquarters New Delhi, Nagpur District, HAL Bengaluru, Vijaya Bank Bengaluru, SBM Bengaluru, BMTC Bengaluru, Kerala State team, Varun Travels Beltangady, Alva's Moodbidri, Sporting Ullal, and Udupi district teams are participating in the event. Jagadish Kanadi, Prashanth Rai, Sukesh Hegde, Prashant Wankhede, Jeev Kumar, Shabbir Babu and some other well-known players are representing Mumbai team in this tournament.
Karnataka State Amateur Kabaddi Association honorary president, Amarnath Rai, president, Srikant Shetty, office bearers, Ratan Shetty, Purushotham Poojary, Uday Chowta, Dr Mohit Suvarna, K T Suvarna, Chandrahas Shetty, Namdev Rao, Sudhakar Rai, Giridhar Shetty, Ramanath Vitla, Hasanabba Thumbe, and Chandrashekhar Karna, members, Satish Bhandary, U S Hasanabba, and Randeep Kanchan, board referees, Premnath Ullal, Monappa Kulai, renowned Kabaddi veteran, Jayaram Shetty Mumbai, fans of Kabaddi sport, Stevan D'Souza, Mogarnad, and thousands of fans were present at the inaugural. A grand procession taken out on the occasion arrived at the stadium after offering puja at the local Lord Nandaneshwara temple on the way.
30 injured as gallery at first Pro-Kabaddi tourney in Panambur collapses
Mangaluru, Apr 15: About 30 people were injured after a spectator gallery collapsed during the first-ever national-level Pro-Kabaddi tournament organized at Panambur beach here on Friday April 15.
It is learnt that a cameraperson belonging to a media was among the injured.
The three-day beach Pro-Kabaddi tournament, organized by the Karnataka Amateur Kabaddi Association for the first time in the city, was inaugurated earlier in the evening by sports minister Abhaychandra Jain.
Nearly 3,000 people had gathered to watch the first evening of the tournament played under floodlights. During the 9th match, one of the spectator galleries collapsed, injuring several people.
The injured were taken to different hospitals and the remaning matches were suspended for the evening. The tournament will resume on Saturday April 16, said the organizers.
Mangaluru North MLA Mohiuddin Bava visited the spot and also the injured at the hospital.
Speaking to media persons, Bava said, "This is a major accident, and over 25 have been injured. We will do as much as possible for their treatment. I will pray for their quick recovery. Good arrangements were made for the tournament but fate had different plans."
