Mangalore, Oct 13: The Sahyadri Institute of Health Sciences’ (SIHS) graduation ceremony of the first batch of B Sc nursing and the GNM students (2002-06) was held at Loyola Hall of St Aloysius PU College here, at 6 pm on Friday October 12.

Speaking on the occasion Prof Prasanna, principal, Government College of Nursing, Kottayam, Kerala advised that by attending work-shops or continuing education programmes, nurses should upgrade their knowledge. She informed that based on her own study, she found that 80% of nurses had not attended any workshops or continuing education programme (CEP).

Prof Prasanna lamented the fact that many nurses were not even knowledgeable enough to reply to queries of patients and their relatives. She felt that what they had achieved so far was only basic education and stressed on the need to develop expertise in a specific area of interest.

Moreover Prof Prasanna cautioned that those nurses who chose not to update their knowledge, would soon get outdated. She further urged nurses to develop passion for patient care, which was on the wane in the hi-tech times, she added.

The chief guest on the occasion Dr P S Prabhakaran, VC, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore released the Institute’s annual magazine, ‘Illuminus’. The guests of honour were Dr Ashwath Narayan, chairman, Padmashree College of Nursing, Bangalore, Narayana Swamy, chairman, Sarvodaya College of Nursing, Bangalore.
