Udupi: Tulunada Vedike demand Tulu in 8th schedule of Constitution

Udupi, Apr 18: Members of Tulunada Rakshana Vedike staged a protest on Monday April 18 in front of Clock Tower, here demanding the inclusion of Tulu language in 8th schedule of the Constitution and to consider it as the official language of the state.






Addressing the protesters, Yogish Shetty Jeppu said, Tulu has been a century old language, but even so it has not been considered as one of the state languages. It is a contemporary language for all the Pancha Dravidian languages. Tulu is considered the richest language compared to all other languages. Today this language is struggling for an identity in a country which is considered as the world's largest democratic country.

He further added that this language has got academic recognition from the state of Karnataka and due to this recognition the government had passed the order for text books to be printed. The government passed an order in 2011, for Tulu to be taught as the third language in Dakshana Kannada and Udupi districts.

The language must not be neglected and Tulu speakers are seen all over India as well as in other parts of the world, mainly in the Gulf, UK, Europe, Canada, Australia and USA. The pro-tulu organizations are constantly working towards protecting Tulunadu culture, language and its rich heritage.

Yogish Shetty also demanded inclusion of Tulu in 8th schedule of the Constitution.

    It is a pity that Tulu Rajya was not made during the state reorganization. Tulu Nadu which would have been as large as kerala and a best state in the country is nowhere today. It is a shame that we have study in kannada which is an alien language. There is large scale discrimination against Tulu and Tulu nadu people. We all must fight and make Tulu Nadu state. Jai Tulu Nadu
