Mangalore City All Decked up for Navrathri Utsav

MANGALORE, Oct 14: Temples across the city are in the midst of Navrathri festivities, which got under way here on Friday. Authorities of all leading temples such as Mahathobhar Mangaladevi temple, Boloorl; Gokarnanateshwara temple, Kudroli; Durga Parameshwari temple, Kateel have drawn up a schedule of cultural, religious and even variety entertainment programmes to celebrate the festivities.
Governor Rameshwar Thakur will kick start the Dasara festivities at Kudroli Gokarnanateshwara temple today. He will inaugurate the festivities at noon.
Dasara finale
The finale of the Dasara festivities at Kudroli will be held on October 22 when the famed “Mangalore Dasara Procession” of Sharada Math and the Navadurgas will be taken out. Cultural troupes too will be a part of the procession. The Kshetra has organised cultural programmes by leading artistes at Santhoshi Kala Mantap every day up to October 20 from 6.30 p.m.
Tulu Kavighosti
Authorities of Mangaladevi Temple at Boloor here have arranged for various cultural programmes as part of the festivities.
There will be a Tulu Kavighosti on Sunday in association with Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy and Sahityasakthara Okkoota, Mangalore; a Tulu drama “Boori Basave” on Tuesday and a dance drama “Sri Krishna Nritya Roopaka” by Vidyashree Radhakrishna and troupe on Wednesday. These are the highlights of some of the activities planned. In addition Yakshagana programmes will also be held.
Likewise, the authorities in charge of Durgaparameshwari Temple at Kateel and the Mariyamma Temple at Urwa-Boloor here are observing Navrathri in their own way.
Various religious rituals would be held at Kateel, according to Sameer Shukla, Assistant Commissioner, Mangalore sub-division, who is also the administrator. He added that all the arrangements had been made for the benefit of devotees taking part in the festivities.
Dasara activities in the city are not restricted to the temples here alone. The Sarvajanika Navarathri Sharada Mahotsava Samiti at Ullal, which is also celebrating its diamond jubilee has arranged for religious and cultural programmes on all nine days. A souvenir commemorating the activities of the samiti will be released on October 20. The idols of Navadurga will be immersed in the Arabian Sea off Ullal on October 21.
