Their student, Dhanraj Saripalla, who secured silver and bronze medal in the Special Olympics held at Shanghai in China from October 2 to 11, was offered touching welcome when he arrived at KSRTC bus stand on Sunday, October 14 morning.

His proud parents, Madhav and Leela, sister Nandini, MLA Yogish Bhat, physical instructor Narayan and teachers of St Agnes Special School, were waiting since hours to welcome him. When he arrived at the location, the entire place was changed to festive atmosphere.

Dhanraj is studying in the Class IX at St Agnes Special School.

“Despite his left hand was injured when he was practising on the ground at Shanghai, he has been successful in bagging silver and bronze medals", said Donnet D’Silva, physical director of St Aloysius College, who accompanied Indian Special Olympic team to China.

At the same time, MLA Yogish Bhat, announced cash award of Rs 5 thousand to Dhanraj and assured to recommend the state administration to honour him with awards.

Vasant Kumar Shetty, special officer of this Olympics tour, said that it’s glad that a Mangalorean boy has made a distinct achievement in the world of Special Olympics, represented by countries from across the world.  He has come from a poor family. However, with the support from citizens of Mangalore and the various social welfare and voluntary organizations, here helped him to achieve this marvelous debut, he opined.

Later, the jubilant crowd carried him in a colourful procession accompanied by band which passed through M G Road, PVS Circle, Bunts Hostel, finally concluded at St Agnes Special School Grounds, Bendoor.

Hi Dhanraj, Please accept our hearty congratulations on securing the Silver & Bronze medals, which is an achievement itself. My congratulations go to your mentors and the other team members too who participated in these Special Olympics. One parting shot to the bigwigs of the State /Central Government, you should be ashamed of yourselves to offer such a paltry sum as an award. Would you have done this, if Dhanraj hailed from and influential and well to do family? Please wake up and encourage talent where is it due. Winning in Cricket where you are able bodied and pampered by sponsors is not a great achievement. This is achievement I say.

Congratulations Dhanraj! You have made a name in our country and i'm proud of you. Its nice to hear that Mr.Yogish Bhat announced cash award of Rs 5 thousand, but it would have been still nice if the state government had announced a cash award of Rs 5 lakh.

Congratulations Dhanraj! Your achievement is indeed noteworthy and I am very proud of you. I will always remember you because when I was a student of Psychology in St. Agnes College, I had spent a couple of hours with your class as part of my practicals. You stood out from the rest because you never failed to recognise me or smile back, whenever we met in the Bus stand or in the bus to Kulshekar. I pray God's choicest blessings on you and wish you all the very best for your future. God Bless you.

Hats off to you Dhanraj.Wish you good luck & God bless. I agree with Nityananda Shetty, why only cricket is boosted so much whereas rest games are not, even tenis, hockey etc game players put all their ability and hardwork in the game but are not been appreciated nor been recognized by government or any organization like cricket is,?
