Mangaluru, Apr 21: District 1st additional and sessions court in Mangaluru has sentenced a man for life term for killing his mother and sister.
Vasu Poojary (44,) from Nelligudde in Elathur in the taluk, is the person sentenced after the conviction.
Vasu had committed the murder at his home on 12 December 2009 by slitting the throats of the victims with knife. His mother Rathi and sister Vimala (25) died as a consequence. Vasu’s other sister had gone to a beedi branch to deliver beedies. Before she reached home back, the murder was committed.
A case was registered at Mulky police station. Then inspector Shivaprakash R Nayak investigated the case and filed the chargesheet.
Judge C M Joshi pronounced the sentence after the trial at the district 1st additional and sessions court on Wednesday. The judge sentenced Vasu for a life term and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000. If the convict fails to pay the fine, he will send an additional 6 months in the jail.
Vasu had said during the trial that he was not mentally stable during the murder and hence he committed the crime. The court had sent him to Nimhans hospital in Bengaluru for medical opinion. His argument was not accepted by the court due to lack of proper evidence. The court has allowed him to continue the medication prescribed by the hospital.
13 witnesses had testified in the trial and 13 evidences were exhibited.
Pushparaj Adyanthaya was the public prosecutor in the beginning and Raju Poojary took over later.
The convict has already spent 7 years in jail which will be adjusted with the present sentence.
